What’s the Difference between Men’s and Women’s Skin Care?
While it may have only recently become fashionable, proper skin care for men has always been an essential part of looking your very best. While just about every company has created their own skin care line just for men, it is important to note that aside from including a shave cream or gel, the only difference between men’s and women’s skin care is that they have put it in a more masculine looking package and added more manly fragrances to their formulas. Other than having facial hair, men’s skin is exactly the same as women’s and they have the same skin care needs.
Cleanse, Tone and Moisturise
The old three-step system that became popular in women’s skin care back in the eighties still works well today. The first thing a man needs to do is cleanse his face. A facial cleanser should be used instead of soap because soap strips the skin of natural oils and disrupts the skin’s pH balance.
Next, a man would shave with a good shave cream or gel. It is important to use a good sharp razor and use a slow steady stroke in the direction of the hair’s growth. This takes a little longer, but results in a clean shave without nicks and without causing ingrown hairs that cause irritation and mimic pimples.
A toner or balancer comes next. This type of product may be sprayed or splashed on the face (applying with a cotton ball typically doesn’t work as well for men, but may be done if the shave is clean enough). The toner balances the pH and removes excess traces of dirt, oil and cleanser that may be left on the skin.
Moisturisers protect and add moisture to the skin. It is important to use a moisturizer every day to keep the skin from becoming dehydrated. This can occur even in men with oily skin because the oil rises to the surface and the underlying cells may still be depleted of moisture. A good moisturizer for day should contain an SPF of at least 8 to protect against the aging effects of the sun and avoid skin cancer. A separate eye cream should be used because the skin around the eyes is more delicate and the molecules of a face moisturizer are too large to penetrate the skin there. The skin around the eyes is usually the first place that wrinkles and there are many eye creams that can reduce the appearance of lines while preventing new ones from forming.
Let’s Face It
Healthy skin is part of a man’s overall image and should not be neglected. Taking just a few minutes each day can result in healthier more vibrant-looking skin that can boost your self confidence and make you more attractive to others.
