We mentioned a couple of months back that a massive trend for this year is chunky knitwear. Thick cuts, beautiful extravagant fabrics and over the top bold statement graphics/patterns are a must for the wardrobe this season. They can be worn with anything from chinos, to jeans to trousers and are a great versatile piece that is essential for layering up in the cold months. Today we are going to show you what is happening with more specific pieces of knitwear this season and in particular the cardigan.
The cardigan over the last 5 years has become a menswear ESSENTIAL. I cannot recall who set off the whole trend back then, but suddenly and out of nowhere it became a very “cool” piece of fashion clothing that lost the stigma of being old man’s knitwear. Before this time I would not of been seen dead in one but now I must have at least 10 in my wardrobe in a variety of knits, cuts and colours.
I think it has helped that designers are getting creative with the cardigan and started to produce high quality wool or merino wool versions that looked infinitely more fashionable than the cardigan your Granddad just picked up from Marks and Spencers. My first cardigan I bought was a standard All Saints merino wool version in black and to this day it is still an item that I can call on in the winter or summer months and know it will always look great.
The cardigan is just a great layering item. They can be dressed up with a shirt and tie, or they can be completely played down by throwing on a graphic tee underneath and a hoody or leather jacket over the top of it. This versatility and chameleon qualities makes it an absolute style staple that every man should own. Layering is easy because if you have a thin version you can throw items on underneath or over the top and thicker chunky versions can be over sized and used as a makeshift coat – as long as it’s no raining and you will not ruin your fabric!
The chunky large cardigan is this season’s major trend within cardigans. Like the chunky knitwear we featured we are talking thick high quality fabrics with extra detailing like cable knit construction and even duffel fixings instead of buttons. The prints and patterns are not so present in the new season cardigans but this just makes them even more like to last throughout seasons and years – not be so “passing trend” time limited. The other key quality to look for in your new cardigan would be oversizing and “slouchy” construction. These new era chunky cardigans are big, thick and over sized so they have that really warm and cosy vibe to them. They will be slightly longer than usual and just hang off the contours of your body slightly more than a fitted merino wool version would. It just adds to the look and appearance of weight that these new styles give off.
So take a look through some new releases below and I think you will all need to add one of these to the wardrobe this pay day!

Really nice article, I’ve always liked chunky cardigans, but I’ve been wondering whether you could do an article on another more common piece of outerwear- the hoody.
I read your article on the hoody a few months back, but it was focused on zip-thrust hoodys which are great because you can leave them open with a graphic tee underneath etc But the ‘over-the-head’ variety are harder to use in outfits as you can’t see anything else you’re wearing, normally when I wear these I wear a bold check shirt underneath so you can see the layering or throw a leather jacket over the top… But other than that I can’t really see many other ways of wearing these effectively, thanks for all the great posts!
Yeah I agree, today in Florida it was about warm with a very cool breeze, so I wore a hoodie along with a graphic tee and threw in some other contrasting colors throughout the outfit. But maybe do a more up-to-date post on hoodies/pullovers? I don’t really know how far they can go, fashion-wise.
article on ed hardy ben please
The Fred Perry and Lyle & Scott cardigns look wicked Ben and are perfect for the cold winter here in england. I really like the fit of the Fred Perry Menswear both original Laurel T shirts (made in england) and there range of summer Merino Cardignas.
I Just invested in my first Check Shirt of the year and purchased the Delaware from All Saints along with a wicked lightweight Grey Marl Cards T shirt from AS also which looks great on its onw and under the check shirt.
I have been looking for a more tapered pair of black/navy joggers to wear also and was wondering if you could do a feature on casual sportswear and bring the hoodie into it also for the others..by the way, i looked at some of those Elvis Jesus Tees and Hoodies and they look great, really like nothing around and different from Evisu.
Do you think you couls maybe do some outfits with joggers/hoodies with Leather jackets/Hi tops/ Militray casual/check Shirts /Tees ?
many thanks again for your ideas
please DO NOT do an article on Ed Hardy, can’t stand it!

Mo – I take all requests into account but generally have a loose list about what I want to write each week.
Ed Hardy as a topic is slightly limited as really they are just extreme graphic tees or hoodies which can be put into most outfits if that is your taste. Look through the look books section for outfit ideas that incorporate the graphic tee or hoody and I am sure you can sub Ed Hardy into it.
I prefer to give ideas about how to wear an ARTICLE of clothing rather than a brand – because there is more theory behind it and then people can tailor the look to their personal taste.
The hoodies or pull over stuff I will try and have a look at how to pull it off well. Unfortunately some fashion items are just that simple to figure out – the over the top hoody you can not do as much with in comparison to a full zip just because it will only ever show the top half of your layering underneath and there is no way around it.
I will try and get a new collection together though and see what I can do for you.
ben,
the other article give some good tips on how to wear the joggers, just tso more questions…
i noticed you used the Milan menswaer link to show the Jesus Elvis pieces which is based in m home town of Cleethorpes, Lincs…but where would one find these articles in the London area ?
secondly, i cannot seem to find the black joggers from All Saints in Medium cos they are not around in the main store in Spitalfields and only in large online, can u suggest any others apart from the Top Man range ? with more of a street fashion/slim leg at bottom instead of the gym bunnie vibe. thanks.
I second that Seb. Just not appealing at all..
I think i will be investing in one of these in a neutral colour like dark grey or navy or black cos like you said it will pass the test of time in the wardrobe i believe too, i fancy the look of this one, what you think ?
Junk De Luxe Cardigan – Click Here
have to wait til pay day in November though
The allsaints patchwork cardigan looks amazing online but it has never appeared in any of the high-street stores i’ve visted… and for 175nicker it’s hardly an item i can afford to take a punt on! Has anyone came across it in any of the stores, if so hows the fit, feel etc?
Hi Jason,
Yeah I love the cardigan, I knew I would miss someone out and forgot to put Urban Outfitters new range on there.
Junk De Luxe make quality clothing so you will not go wrong – plus I love the whole double button up vibe.
For Elvis Jesus stuff I am not sure where you will find them in London. I am not from there so I cannot really advise. Try this page on their site though and you will find somewhere near I am sure:

As far as joggers are concerned you might want to look in your local Urban Outfitters is you do not like the Topman range because they have a pair of Acne black tapered versions online which look a great investment.
James – Unfortunately my local All Saints is appalling at getting any of the decent stock in so I always go online for my new pieces. I have not got that particular cardigan but hopefully someone else can advise you. What I will say though is it’s free delivery online so it’s not too bad a risk to try it in your normal size. You might just lose a bit of cash if you had to send it back.
Re: All Saints mail order…I live in central london but still use the mail order in preference. It’s free delivery and they have an excellent return policy with no questions asked…you do pay the postage of course, but you’re talking about £5-£7 for most things.
Thanks ben & witness;
For some reason i always thought allsaints items were only valid for an exchange or store credit [i think this is due the the wording on their receipts!]
Hey James – I think you’re right for store bought stuff…but all-saints online stuff uses different rules, in fact I think it’s illegal for any company not to let you have cash back if you buy online (too many people rocking back from the pub and buying 2 washing machines and a new bathroom suite lol). With all-saints you have twice as long to return it to too compared to their store policy.
I tihnk they like to keep things seperately at All saints cos i chamged a couple items recently for more expensive things.
They told me at the main store in jacks place, spitalfields that refunds/exchnages are different at…
-the normal all saints stores
=the concessions like House of Fraser/selfridges
- online purchases
and you cannot buy something online and return it in store, likewise any credit notes have to be used seperately also. i do believe that the timeframe is longer for refunds online and a credit note lasts longer also.
Man! all the best chunky cable cardigans are sold out everywhere. I want that long navy blue one so badly.. it’s the third one down. When I click the link it just takes me to a blank page, where can I get that?
