The Autumn/Winter Men's Fashion Essential - The Mac

Over the last few weeks we have started to feature some of the new drops in the Autumn/Winter designer ranges. In most of the look books I put together I have talked about the importance of having a great statement jacket and you can’t go wrong with the classic men’s mac or long over coat. It oozes style and elegance, with clean lines and usually a long cut which really will set a formal or relaxed formal outfit off beautifully.

It is going to again be massively popular this year within the men’s fashion world, as they were a massive presence on the cat walks and all the new collections launching from the major designer brands are featuring them heavily already as some of the first items they release. They are perfect for this transitional season, because obviously the weather over here is so unpredictable and frustrating, that you can go from hot sun to showers within an hour. So whilst the weather is slightly warmer you can rock a mac with a plain t-shirt or formal shirt underneath either unbuttoned or tied around the belt waist (one of my favourite relaxed looks). However once we progress into winter, there are more options for layering multiple items underneath (and still leaving the mac open) or buttoning it right the way up and fully belted to give you a very clean cut silhouette.

You really need to invest if you are going to buy a mac or over coat. It is one of those items that the more you spend on it, the better it will look. This doesn’t have to be a big deal as it is an item that will definitely stand the test of time and last through multiple seasons – hence it being an investment piece. Whilst you might buy a t-shirt for £40 and wear it one summer and then never touch it again, you know that spending £300+ on a mac you can wear multiple years and will never age is a great idea. Plus like I said in the Modern Dandy look book, if you really invest heavily in one or two KEY items that make up your look, then you can skimp more on the other items and people will still presume they are expensive.

Personally I LOVE the bold colour macs right now. There is a gorgeous bold blue colour below that I have featured before, as well as the beige Burberry mac from a few weeks ago. My other favourite would be the Vivienne Westwood over coat in a light shade of grey, which gives you so many colour co-ordination options for your layers and to me just looks amazing quality.

New Season Macs and Overcoats

I have featured below just great statement jackets. These include traditional belted macs, half lengths macs and beautiful long overcoats which still have that statement piece feel to them. I have tried to find some great cheaper examples, so hopefully there will be something in your budget that you can add to your collection. This is an amazing item that can really form the basis of your whole work outfit (for those in 9-5 jobs) and looks just as professional as putting a blazer over the top – but obviously with more of a fashion edge.
