Exciting news has reached ‘beans, that fashion favourite Christopher Kane is to launch his début menswear collection next week at that church of clothier cool, Dover Street Market.
Kane will be joining a hit list of designers who first cut their teeth designing spectacular creations for women that have wowed at fashion weeks the world over. If it worked for McQueen, Gareth Pugh and Matthew Williamson then we can expect that same feverish reaction as the world awaits what is set to be a pivotal collection from the feted young designer.
This isn’t the first time Mr Kane has designed for gents (his signature tee’s are just as popular with chaps as they are gals) – under his guise as creative director for Versace’s diffusion line ‘Versus’, Kane has breathed new life into both the menswear and womenswear collections since his appointment at the Italian fashion house. Donatella Versace can’t praise Kane highly enough, of the Versus position she says:
“Christopher is a highly creative young designer and his work impressed me from the very beginning. His rock ‘n’ roll style is very powerful, glamorous and sensual – perfectly in tune with the mood of Versus – which was always intended for young people who want clothes that project a personal style that is constantly evolving.”
Of course high praise from Donatella is nothing new for Christopher – the designer doyenne famously sent Mr Kane swathes of fabric after seeing his graduation show, to help the new designer get his early collections off the ground.
So how will Christopher’s design aesthetic translate to his menswear début? The new collection is an extension of the women’s starry eyed, galactic Resort collection, so the prints will look familiar to dedicated followers of fashion. The staple tee’s will be present, allowing a great entry level price point for those looking to invest (£203), while statement pieces such as his new leather jacket reach a not-entirely-shocking £999, with casual pieces making up the rest of collection (highlights include a dreamy soft cashmere sweater and urban edged hoodies; a nod to his east London design roots).
Referencing his own archive of work, the tone of the menswear collection is based on a film Christopher Kane made for the Swarovski Fashion Rocks presentation back in 2007 which took inspiration from natural star constellations – what better way to make us think this collection is going to be out of this world?
