Movember: Changing The Face Of Men’s Health
Like a coat of arms for your face, a well maintained moustache is a symbol of masculinity, a symbol for the ultimate gentlemen. Well, throughout the month of November it represents a whole lot more than that. Challenging men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache, Movember represents one of the biggest men’s specific charity initiatives in the world today – with over 1 million participants raising £26 million in 2009.
The rules are simple, start Movember 1st clean shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month. The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days.

Team FashionBeans: A Call To Arms
When planning my personal contribution (I myself will wholeheartedly be growing a moustache in support of Movember) I had a gut feeling that I could be doing more. I wanted to find a way of trying to encourage others to take part in Movember, to further raise awareness, and to raise even more money for such a fantastic cause. My musings were swiftly followed by a light bulb moment – by using my voice as FashionBeans Grooming Editor as my base I could spread the Movember message to the masses. And so it came to pass that Team FashionBeans was born.
Team FashionBeans therefore cordially invites you, the loyal FashionBeans readers, to join as a ‘Mo Bro’ team mate and take part in a joint Movember effort. All you have to do to join is sign up to Movember and follow the ‘Join My Team’ instructions, searching for ‘FashionBeans’ as a team name. Then pledge your allegiance to the cause and grow the best damn moustache your testosterone will allow you to grow – from handlebar to the thin and wispy your contribution will count. 30 days growing and grooming a moustache while badgering friends and family for donations, that’s all we’re asking. In return for your effort eyes will opened to the risk of cancer that effects men and who knows, lives could even be saved because of your effort.
Hopefully if enough of us get involved I’d love to do a ‘Team Fashionbeans’ Hall Of Fame at the end of the month featuring the best moustaches and highest fundraisers from the team. Gentlemen, this is you challenge, now go and grab it with both hands.
What’s Next?
Growing a moustache for Movember raises some obvious grooming questions. My next article will cover the art of caring for your moustache, but the more pressing issue is a clean comfortable shave with which to accentuate your growing moustache (and masculine reputation). One of my first ever FashionBeans articles covered the top five shaving mistakes, these errors remain big stumbling blocks, but if you hope to avoid accompanying your new moustache with some unsightly shaving irritation then be sure to follow a comprehensive 3 step routine (Preparation, Shave, Protect).
My Movember Kit
To help me achieve a close comfortable shave during my Movember journey I will be using a combination of a few of my established grooming favourites, and a few new products that I’ve been dying to test.
To find out more about Movember including partners and beneficiaries visit their website, or to join Team FashionBeans (go on, you know you want to!) click here and follow the ‘Join My Team’ instructions searching for ‘FashionBeans’ when asked which team you would like to join. Alternatively, if you would just like to sponsor then click here.

I’m only 16, but heck I’ll give it a go! Everyone secretly loves a good ol’ bumfluff tash, very attractive among the latest female generation. I think I’ll grow mine for the rest of the year to reach my potential
Movember is an amazing concept. Every man secretly wonders if they look like Magnum P.I with a ‘tache. You’ve inspired me to have a go this year! My men’s fashion and style site will be seeing how I get on as well as look at essential grooming products for the hairy-faced gent.
