Men’s Accessories Introduction
This week I am finally going to move into the accessories department for men’s fashion basics and it has been a long time coming! But before we go into too much depth I want to just outline the concept that I’m trying to get across with these coming articles. It is true that the details make the gentleman, but what’s even truer is that too many details make a great big mess. By this I mean that the accessories you wear should be used to individualise an outfit, they should not become part of your outfit. I currently have three different watches that I use depending on what I’m wearing or what situation I’m in. I also have a couple of pieces of jewellery that I like put on to add character to a look. However, there are plenty of days where I don’t wear either of them and I still look just as good. Don’t ever feel obligated to wear every accessory you have all the time; you’ll just end up looking like a West Coast Rapper.
Men’s Braces
So, with this in mind, let’s start at the very bottom of the ladder with the choices a man faces when it comes keeping his trousers up. Do you go with a belt or braces? Now I’m sure most of you out there do not consider braces as an option, you either go belted or without, right? You’re not wrong, but in the last couple of years they have started to make a major come back in most designer’s lines and you can expect it to hit the mainstream real soon when Wall Street 2 comes out in the cinema. Who personifies braces more than Gordon Gekko? And with tie bars, pocket squares and fedoras all on the rise again, why not add braces as a way of customising your look?
Thin clip on braces can channel a great punk rock vibe, whilst wider buttoned versions give a more neo-preppy feel. But regardless of whether you clip or button there are a few keys points to remember. Firstly, be mindful of your wardrobe! Try to keep the braces in neutral colours so they won’t clash with what you pair them with – navy or grey are your safest bet. If you do fancy a coloured pair then you will need to keep the rest of the outfit monochromatic so as not to clash or detract from your statement suspenders. Secondly, a lot like ties, be aware of your proportions. If you’re the slender indie type then wide braces will start to look like lederhosen and if you’ve got a wide chest then thin ones will look like permanent marker down your shirt. Keep everything complimentary with your own body type. Once you bear these points in mind, there is no reason that you can’t start to wear braces with your jeans, trousers or chinos.
Men’s Belts
Of course there are rules for belts as well but they are a lot simpler for beginners. Always match your belt with your shoes. So brown with brown, black with black please, and if you can’t then don’t wear a belt at all. You do not have to stick to tones religiously; brown with tan is still fine. Lastly, make sure the belt you wear suits the occasion. Formal occasions will always require a belt with holes in it, with a fork belt buckle – preferably in darker colours.
Casual situations give you many more options. Go for belts with detailing and patterns or maybe try a military style belt with a slide buckle, these are particularly great for summer because they come in an array of colours to match the bright shoes you’ll be wearing as well. I have one in blue and another in yellow to go with my navy boat shoes and yellow plimsolls. Finally, try to stay away from belts with huge tacky buckles, no one will be convinced that you’re a cowboy or Hells Angel so just don’t bother, OK?
Ways To Wear
And finally here are a few ideas of ways to use belt or braces in your wardrobe:
- Why not try braces with your suits to work? Make sure they match your suit colour and you’ll be on for a winner as soon as you take your jacket off. Again look to the Wall Street movies for inspiration.
- If you want to wear a belt when you wear your trainers, then try and invest in a white leather buckle belt. It co-ordinates with the leather of your trainers better than a canvas belt would.
- With military boots still a huge trend piece at the moment, why not put your braces with them too? Start channelling some serious punk rock with brown boots, black slim jeans, a white t-shirt and red skinny braces.
- As I said slide buckles are great for the summer, but why not put them with your summer suits? If that summer wedding you are planning to attend isn’t a strict black tie event why not try a navy belt with a white suit and navy boat shoes?
Braces Lookbook
So because a lot of you will not be familiar with using braces within your outfits, I have compiled a few images from Lookbook.nu showing you how versatile they actually are – and how great they can look – even within casual outfits. Hopefully you will see that they are not an item you have to shy away from, and you can pull off a very individual look with a bit of creativity:

So there you have guys, rules on how to wear belts or braces with a few ideas on what to pair them with. And if you really don’t like braces that’s fine, why not try clipping them on but letting them hang? It has the same effect as an untied bow tie, no one has to know you were never going to use it properly. But remember, it’s belts OR braces not AND. They should never be used at the same time!
Until next week guys,
Matt Allinson

Integrated Braces
There are many new items coming to market now with integrated braces incorporated into the design. This means even if you are not planning on wearing the braces properly, you can let them hang and just give your outfit a bit of individuality.

Men’s Fashion Basics – Part 32 – Scarves & Snoods
Men's Fashion Basics - Part 30 - Formal Shoes

I tried braces a few years back and hadn’t really paid much attention to them as an option again. Interesting.
Not keen on the slide belt buckle though. I always feel it looks a bit tacky (like a 15 year old’s wardrobe) and worse than the chunky buckle belts
What do you here in fashionbeans think about wearing suspenders with a belt? I´ve been wondering that question for a while.
Greetings from Norway!
Great articles Matt. I love this website in general. A suggestion for an upcoming Men’s Fashion Basics article? Can you do a feature on bow ties? Seem to be really popular and I’ve started wearing them both formally and casually on several occasions. Would love to get your advice on different bow tie styles, matching, accessorizing, etc. That and the pocket square. Thanks!
Braces or jumpers is definitely gaining back in style. But not really for bigger men, right?
I got my first pair of braces last week to go with a suit and I never want to wear a belt again.
If you’re keen on braces with a suit, I’d recommend getting trousers with buttons (or do what did and get them added, with the belt loops taken off). And treat yourself to some Albert Thurstons.
The clip-ons only look good with jeans, in my opinion.
@ Pal Zileri Ties braces can be for the bigger gentleman they just need to be in proportion. So stay away from the skinny ones and go for some nice chunky wide ones and preferably which are button ons for more heft.
@ANONYMOUS85 – never wear braces and belt at the same time, they are forms of holding your trousers up but together they contradict themselves. You only need to use one to keep them up.
I tried braces for the first time last week and I may be hooked. In addition to being incredibly functional (better than belts, in my opinion), they garnered quite a few compliments.
love braces – wore them a few years back before others really got into them. haven’t worn them since, but love seeing them around. need to get me some button on ones – the best style. need some of those button up flap trousers too, the old style square panel to finish the look.
Good article on braces and nice to see a few more people willing to give them a go. I started wearing them a few months back and do not wear a belt anymore. Great comments from other guys who see them, just wish a few more guys would give them a go. Need to be seen of course, don’t like the old hide them under a jacket idea.
Fess that i prefer braces to an uncomfortable belt any day, but have always been too shy to be seen wearing them, so I was mortified to be caught out by my latest gf. However, she was very complimentary, unlike my mates who ribbed me unmercifully, but as days have passed, they have become more interested, and I actually caught my bro trying on a pair of mine yesterday! He can have them if it promotes the cause!
Yeah like Ed says people feel funny about being seen in braces but if more people go for it then others will follow. I wear mine to work and out a nites and a few mates have now started to wear them too so maybe it is catching on again. I think guys should just give them a go and show them off, why hide them !
Was originally embarrassed in the company of my younger brother when he started wearing braces, particularly in the pub, but had a sneaking admiration for his individuality, and secretly tried a pair. They felt great, and kept my pants up very comfortably, so I decided not to bother what other folk felt, but nobody has made any adverse comment, and I have noticed that more guys are wearing them now. Even my partner thinks they look great.
Had never given a thought to wearing braces, but my gf gave me a pair this Christmas, so felt it would appear ungrateful if I didn’t give them a go. Whilst feeling very self-conscious at first, I could not believe how comfortable they were, and how well they kept my jeans up. I plan to buy some more colours so they go with all my oufits – I am a convert.
I agree about how individual you can look, and most men won’t touch them. I think they look fabulous and quirky on the right person.
Got a pair of braces from my Gran for Xmas, and my parents insisted I wore them when she visited. Actually, I felt really comfortable in them, and may give them a second chance, but hidden from my mates!
I have always like braces, so much more comfortable than belt. So come on guys, lets start showing them off. They may come back into fashion!
As with the comments of one or two others, I have often felt embarrassed wearing braces publicly, but have always liked them and often concealed by wearing a sweater. I find them much more comfortable than a belt and especially so if the jeans nice and loose fitting.
hi there,
just spotted this website when looking for a new pair of braces, I have worn braces on and off since the seventies they were kind of in in the early seventies then out and back in and so on. but I have to say that they are far more efficient and comfortable than a belt.
My wife at first didn’t like them as she associated them with her granddad but she also complained about me always hauling up my trousers when wearing a belt , now I wear them a lot and don’t haul up my trousers all the time.
I have to admit though I am still a bit self concious about wearing them and tend to cover them with a sweater ( I think they are still looked upon as old fashioned or maybe a bit counterculture as in the skinheads of the past. ) but I agree that they are far more practical and comfortable than belts.
So if more people wore them then they would become more mainstream.
I experimented with braces a couple of years ago, and liked the freedom and comfort. Kept them hidden, as most guys do, but eventually got caught out by my gf. Very red-faced, I stuttered a lame excuse, but she said she thought they were great. I do now wear them more openly, but still feel embarrassed. Why? Guys, let me know your feelings on the matter.
Arthur, your comments are intersting. Like your g/f, my other half is absolutely OK with my wearing them, but like you I still feel a bit embarrassed and also ask ‘why’? So as you ask for feelings on the matter I would be really glad to see some discussion on this site about it.
Some folks say that historically braces were seen as ‘underwear’ therefore should not be seen. Yet I see many young men (I am not young!) with jeans well below underpant waist showing literally what is their underwear. That, I gather is deemed to be ‘cool’ so why are we lovers of braces so shy?
Answers men please!!
Sherlock, I see guys walking around with their waist around their ass and pants dragging on the ground and I laugh at them. First of all, this was a 90′s trend (at least here in the US) and second, even when it was popular, it wasn’t actually fashionable. A&F still has a style where showing off the wasteband of your boxers is cool, and that’s fine……if you’re a tween. But for guys like us who care about style and are more mature, I don’t think that showing off your undies is very proper. I say dress your maturity level and while you should try to make a statement, try not to do it so people are laughing at you.
Are you making a case for wearing braces Craig or for ‘making a statement’ (whatever kind) in an appropriate way?
Sherlock, just saying to please do yourself a favor and don’t show your underpants in public. Whereas braces USED to be seen only as an undergarment, underpants will ALWAYS be an undergarment.
I do have a general question to anyone who can answer. I know I’m American and we are definitely behind on fashion trends. But not too long ago, belt buckles were “in”. Not the big cowboy ones, but the smaller ones not much wider than the belt. I’m going through my wardrobe and I have a few of them, but I don’t know if they’re still in fashion. Can anybody help?
Great article! I never wore them, unless it was a theme-based party. However, I recently bought Kurt Geiger Men’s Lowe Lace Up brogues, which have 3 colours in them – grey / brown + contrasting blue sole. Any advice on what belt or braces would fit? I’d be a bit afraid to introduce yet another colour, so that’s tricky….
Hi Thomas,
Are you talking the leather end colour or the actual braces colour? I guess brown leather end braces with grey or blue in the elastic part woulf look great.
Sorry did not finish. If you prefer clip ends (which I personally don’t) then any of the colours in your shoes would go well.
Do post a reply here as to your decision
