Unfortunately, we do not often get to experience the exotic climates bestowed on other parts of the globe. Let’s face it, we’re lucky if we’re blessed with anything slightly reminiscent of a so-called ‘summer’.
However, there is one trend for spring/summer 2010 which has definitely transcended the Sun Belt and so there is no excuse not to embrace the relaxed, carefree aesthetic of the ‘nomad’.
Taking its inspiration from North Africa, central Asia and the Middle East, the nomad look draws on the traditional attire of African and Asian wanderers. From the bold, geometric patterns of North Africa to the lightweight and draped fabrics of the Middle East, this season is definitely the time to release your inner adventurer.
With designers such as Givenchy, Versace and John Galliano leading the way for this carefree style, there are a number of key details which can be explored and translated to produce a wearable and realistic wardrobe.
An integral part of this look is undoubtedly the relaxed silhouette. Layering and draping are principle factors of the nomad theme and this is something that can be achieved with drop crotch trousers, a more masculine, up-dated version of the harem pant, with either a cropped or long baggy leg. Over-sized t-shirts with a cowl, scooped or draped neck add strength to the look and reinforce the layered element; Topman have some great pieces for a low budget.
Shirts with extended tails in a lightweight or translucent fabric are a great way to incorporate two of this season’s trends, nomad and sheer, into one key piece. Therefore, if you’re looking to purchase one investment piece I would suggest you opt for a long length, button up shirt as this is a definite staple of the look and combines two trends – meaning it’s worth spending double the money! Damir Doma, available at Oki-Ni.com, is undoubtedly my designer of choice with some superb pieces which embody the precise aesthetics of the trend. With a palette of black, white, burnt orange and sand don’t be afraid to embrace strong colour and prints, but avoid mixing too much into one outfit.
Although barefoot may seem the more authentic option, unfortunately this isn’t generally accepted in British culture and so I would recommend just keeping things simple. If you invested in a pair of gladiator sandals from a few seasons ago then now is the time to rescue them from their place at the back of your wardrobe. Alternatively, to dress the look up a bit, add a pair of patent leather shoes either in black or tan, whichever suits your outfit.
The thing I love most about the nomad look is that how far you choose to pursue the style is completely down to you and your personal style. If you’re feeling less ‘desert venture’ and more ‘day at the zoo’ don’t feel that you have to miss out on this trend. Billowing desert scarves and monochrome tribal prints are both subtle ways of including the nomad influence into your look, without taking it too far. However, for the more adventurous amongst you, there’s no limit to expressing your nomadic side. Fabric wrapped around the waist and tied at the side, drop crotch cropped trousers with Middle Eastern flag prints (as seen on the catwalk at Givenchy) and safari headgear, the possibilities, like the journeys, are endless.

I love this trend!! I’ve been rocking cowl neck tees, low crotch trousers/jeans and slouchy cardigans since the sun first pocked it’s friendly face out earlier this month.
I’m really looking forward to getting a new pair of gladiator sandals for when it gets a little hotter.. Any recommendations? (I already have these http://www.office.co.uk/mens/poste/gladiator_sandal/61/6357/17303/1/ and I love them.)
Joshua:
I really love the ones you already have! Maybe go for a black pair this time? Unfortunately, Gladiator Sandals are a little scarce on the high street at the moment (bring on the summer!) but if you’re looking for something to lust over then I would definitely recommend this gorgeous Marc Jacobs pair: http://www.asos.com/Marc-Jacobs/Marc-Jacobs-Leather-Gladiator-Sandals/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=889233&SearchQuery=gladiator sandals&Rf-700=1001&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=20&sort=-1&clr=Brown
This trend is really comfy and stylish at the same time, I’ve been trying this for my week nights, no sandals though for me only boots and sneakers, actually own one pair of sneakers from Bershka very similar to the ones you’ve featured in here with black w/ the 3 straps. This style trend that ROCKS!! overalL-.
Thank you!!!! This is what I have been waiting for. Great article

Americano: Thanks very much for your comment!
Chris: That actual outfit is from the Givenchy S/S 10 Collection but it could probably be re-created quite easily from the high street. All you would need would be two long sleeve tops, one black one white, some patent hightops, some black three quarter legnth leggings pulled up a bit and some simple shorts. If you can’t find any shorts with a similar print then I’d recommend these ones from Topman which are quite cool:

Hope that helps!
