Alex Turner

After lots of feedback from you Fashionbeaners regarding this style icon series, I thought I would please the masses this week, and feature Arctic Monkeys front man, Alex Turner.

Born in Sheffield, England in 1986, Alex Turner has achieved many successes in his career so far. Alex Turner formed the band Arctic Monkeys in 2002 with two of his schoolmates and one of his neighbours. They have become one of Britain’s top musical exports and are critically acclaimed with three [edit: thanks to comments] albums to date. To add to this shared success, Alex was named by NME magazine as the coolest person in the world in December 2005. Now in order to be named the coolest person in the world, musical success isn’t the only judging criteria (although with the NME it would certainly help!) – personal style is always the other consideration, and Alex Turner is now widely regarded in having great fashion sense.

Style Icon

Alex has been dating Alexa Chung for 3 years, which has certainly helped in establishing himself as a style icon in the eyes of those who already love his music and him as an individual. Alexa is very much one of the UK’s top (if not THE top) Fashionistas, and is adored worldwide by women looking to have a unique and effortless style. She tends to favour vintage clothing and has a real laid back London street chic vibe infused within her whole wardrobe. This has definitely rubbed off on Alex, as his clothing and personal dress sense is throwback to the old era of “Rock n Roll” and the whole Mod scene – which I gather he very much admires.

He is known for being pretty quiet in interviews as he ‘chews over his answers for so long that he ends up doubting his own words’ according to Blender magazine. His fashion style isn’t the boldest out of some of the people we could call ‘Style Icons’, but the fact remains that Alex Turner’s style is simple but effective, because it reaches out to the general male population. It’s a look that brings together timeless pieces, and creates a look that most young males would happily wear – especially those of you between 16-25. I think the best way to describe the look is ‘Inner City boy’, and again we can see that the whole style matches exactly what Alexa is doing right now within the fashion world. The look is eclectic and combines preppy with some sixties rock and roll – great for day-to-day wear, but perfect for the night time also.

The Alex Turner Look

Now time for the dissection of the Alex Turner look. The pieces that remain constant throughout his look are a pair of skinny jeans/trousers matched with leather shoes/boots and a statement jacket – whether it be a blazer, trench, wool overcoat or leather jacket. The footwear is usually brown or black and can be in a variety of styles such as suede loafers, black Chelsea boots, brown brogues or simply smart leather shoes. When this footwear is paired with skinny jeans or trousers (in a variety of tones), it provides a wonderful base for the whole of his outfit and makes sure that he is always looking sharp before he even adds any other items. Again this is a true Mod approach to dressing and you won’t often catch him in more modern “indie” pieces such as battered trainers and Converse. Alex is a real throwback, and this is what makes his style individual – especially for a guy his age.

From here, the look becomes quite of a mix. Graphic tees and vests feature, as well as casual striped shirts and plain knitwear. However, wearing a plain scoop neck t-shirt is just as stylishly effective when worn under a black Harrington. This is wear the statement jacket comes in to provide the third key piece in the Mr. Turner wardrobe. He has a collection of amazing jackets which really every guy reading this site should own. In the images above we can see navy long macs, a long black wool overcoat, leather bomber jackets and a cropped wool military jacket. I am willing to bet if we raided his wardrobe we would find an even larger selection. When he wears these items they become THE focal point to every outfit he creates (try looking at the images and seeing what you notice first) and just brings the whole quality up a notch. When matched with the refined bottom half, it means you are onto a winner.

One of the key statement jackets to help create the style of Alex, is the leather jacket. Single zipped leather jackets feature widely in the Alex Turner lookbook, and this is definitely something to invest in. Real leathers are great as they last a long time, and they get better with age. This also creates the rocker twist to the outfit. The addition of accessories such as the brown leather holdall and sunglasses round off the look.

Get The Look

Now that you’ve seen the Alex Turner lookbook, here are my choices of key products to help you create the look of Alex Turner:

  • Skinny jeans or trousers
  • Leather footwear
  • Statement Jackets – Leather/Pea Coat/Wool Overcoat/Mac/Trench

These items above become the focal point for nearly every look he steps out in. 3 Key items can create a great look for you no matter what you pair them with, as he has shown above. If you spend some money investing in these timeless pieces which can be re-used and adapted to any situation, then you KNOW you will look great each time you leave the house.

Other items we have included in the product selections are your basic tees, knitwear and shirts, because he seems to mix and match these dependant on mood and what the occasion is. Plain graphic tees and vests for on stage when it is hot, “modish” striped shirts for casual days, or simply some plain knitwear when the weather cools. You do not have to spend the earth on these items, and they will look expensive/dressed up anyway when paired with the 3 items we mentioned above.
