New Year, New Style
So with Christmas out of the way and most of wondering if we’re going to need to go up a waist size just for the sales, it’s time we start looking forward. Traditionally, this means that we all make a bunch of promises we have no intention of keeping so I thought I would do the same here, sartorially speaking, but these ones I am going to keep! Promise…
The Resolutions
- The Big Clear Out – Time to trim the fat! January is not just the time for a detox from junk food and alcohol you know, it should apply to your wardrobe as well. This year I intend to finally start looking through the clothes I’ve accumulated over the last two years and decide whether I still need them or not. The two rules I’m going by are – have I worn it in the last 6-9 months? And does it still fit me? If the item does not fit within these requirements it’s gone. This way I can lose all the clothes that no longer fit or flatter me and finally get rid of all those shirts and jeans that I never wear but keep just in case. But I will need to be honest with myself!
- Invest, Invest, Invest – I know this is something that I always seem to make a point of but you know how hard it is to actually practice what you preach! But this New Year I am planning to follow my advice to the letter. With every new item that I want to buy I’m going to make sure that it is a versatile piece, I can use it with plenty of other pieces in my wardrobe, but is still classic and stylish enough to be used for a couple of years to come. Time to move away from trends and fashion and invest in style.
- Get a Great Rack – This one really should be top of the list because it’s something that I need soooo bad. I try really hard to look after my footwear because I know that if I do, they will last for some time to come. However, there comes a time when the number of shoes takes over the level of maintenance that can be done. These days I have more shoes tucked in draws and shelves than I do clothes. So I need to invest a quality shoe rack with a couple of levels to it so that I can keep them all in one place and not all on top of one another.
- Buy Some Bling – this is the last frontier that I have yet to conquer and one that has been on my mind for a while now. See, male jewellery has always been something that bothered me because it just doesn’t fit in with my ethos of how I like to dress myself – classic, versatile, masculine pieces combined in intriguing ways. Jewellery, in its smooth, shiny, perfect nature, never really seemed to fit into that. However, recently I’ve changed my mind. With help of an independent jeweller (and there are more of them out there than you think) you have the ability to modify an item to your own taste. It can be made to look more rough and rugged; that little bit more lived in which I think male jewellery should be. Keep your eyes peeled for an up and coming article on my adventures and what I discovered!
- Tux up – enough said really. The only decision I need to make is whether to go for a classic old-hollywood black, grosgrain shawl collar number or go a bit more out there with something in Midnight blue or a deep burgundy. Choices choices…

i had my clear out last friday before the new yr. was quite a fun exercise but i ended up keeping more of my items, couldn’t be as harsh as i intended and as harsh as my girlfriend who threw out loads… the gear is up on ebay now, so hopefully i will see the pennies role in for our wedding this yr :)
Yeah I had my clear out yesterday. Didn’t get rid of all that much but it still felt good. Still have a few gift cards to spend now the sales have ended so hopefully I can pick up a few versatile pieces!
love the resolutions, and am currently in the process of sorting through all my clothes and making some decisions of what to keep and what to throw out, which can be quite difficult I must admit!!!! Definatley agree with investing in some key, versatile pieces to add to my wardrobe. I’ve also been trying to add to my jewellery collection for a while as I definatley feel that some nice items can really bring that extra something special to an outfit.
Cheers for the article and happy new year!
Love the blog! keep on posting interesting info) thank you
my new years resolution is to add more colour to my work wardrobe rather than staying with black/brown/grey all of the time – can you tell me which colours are fashionable at the moment
Very interested on the upcoming jewelry article !
@JOE – it’s not so much what colours are in fashion at the moment but knowing what colour suits you. Often it comes down to skin tone and I believe there are a couple of articles on here by my colleagues covering it. But if you are after a colour to invest in for the up and coming S/S then I’d suggest yellow. It was all over the runways, esp. for Micheal Bastian and his collaboration with Gant.
Good article. Here are some of my NY fashion resolutions:
1) midnight blue tux
2) a red and a beige slim summer suit
3) more versatility in dress shoes (different colors and cominations)
4) pick out a few staples that I have been wanting to try but didn’t have the confidence to pull off
5) get more into accessories
awesome article. I totally agree with you but i missed the following resolution: to investe in pieces that have a history or a meaning (eg. Brought from holiday, vintage it-piece,..) for me that’s important and i hope to find a lot of those.
joe, i am also wearing brighter colours this year and quite like purples and reds.My girlfriend bought me a bright pink shirt from Next for Christmas but i don’t know whether to wear this to the office …any help would be appreciated
@Dan, sure I don’t see why you couldn’t wear it. Try it on and make sure it suits your skin tone first though! And if it is a bright pink then it would be worth keeping everything else you wear in more neutral tones like navy, grey and black. Brown is also a great colour to match with pink. Why try it under a navy jumper or brown cardigan or some other layering piece and see how it looks?
thanks for your advice – i have to be suited for work so i cannot wear cardigan/jumper. however i do have three piece suits in neutral colours of beige and grey so i can follow your advice on this
dan, i like to wear bright coloured shirts with my brown or grey work suits otherwise the look is a little drab. i have bright red/yellow/lilac shirts. as for pink i would always opt for a lighter shade but if you like the brighter pink i wouldn’t worry about wearing it – what are other readers opinions?
i would certainly go for the brighter colours during the summer months but i would stick to white/grey shirts during the winter
