More commonly renowned for maple syrup, beavers and mounties, Canada’s home-grown talent for design often goes unheeded. In recent years, our cousins across the pond have been making their presence felt on the international fashion stage. Whilst Montreal native Erdem Moralioglu continues to create a sartorial stir on the womenswear runways with his exuberant floral creations, another fellow Montrealer, Antonio Azzuolo, has been quietly shaping his own path in the world of menswear.
Canadian born and educated, Azzuolo attended Toronto’s eminent Ryerson University, graduating with a degree in apparel design. Moving to Milan after completing his studies, Azzuolo won the coveted Festival des Jeunes Stylistes de Hyères and went on to work for the legendary houses of Hermes and Kenzo. After a decade in Paris, the time was ripe for a new challenge and Azzuolo relocated to the U.S., where he spearheaded Ralph Lauren’s luxury Black and Purple labels, before establishing his own namesake brand in 2007.
With a family heritage firmly embedded in fine tailoring, Azzuolo employs his inherited bespoke design skills and fuses them with the wealth of experience gained from his time spent in the world’s epicentres of fashion – creating a distinctive and unique appeal with the designs from his highly extolled label.
Initially beginning with a line of high-quality suiting, the label has now expanded to include shirts, outerwear and knits. Staying true to his roots, tailoring remains key to Azzuolo’s work, forming a firm foundation to all his collections.
The SS12 collection offers a succinct edit of sharply tailored single-breasted and double-breasted jackets, in classic tones of grey, navy and white; perfect for high-summer dressing. Knitwear nods towards reworked nautical cool, whilst the outerwear collection consists of playful but practical rainwear in vivid bold and bright shades.
Belted details on jackets are a significant feature throughout the collection, as well as ethnic-inspired indigenous prints and piped-edge lapels. Contrast-colour pockets and zips are a spot-on accolade to summer’s dominant sports-inspired mood.
Clean-lined and wearable, the collection perfectly illustrates the art of well-executed menswear design, with the focus on timeless, quality design, delivered with a nuance of quirky contemporary cool.
The perfect sartorial formula of flawless tailoring techniques coupled with a laid-back neo-dandy appeal, Azzuolo bends the established rules of menswear design with an innate politeness and respectability, but with a confident dash of eclectic nonchalance – we’re certain to expect big things from this gifted design virtuoso in the seasons to follow.
