As a die-hard fan of Cheap Monday, I was extremely excited to see the men’s AW12 Lookbook posted on this very website. Cheap Monday is a brand known for its signature skinny fit denim and young, trendy tees – all defined by their well known skull logo. However, it appears that with a new season, comes a new look.
The inspiration for the AW12 collection has come from the evolution of nature – what Cheap Monday call a “naturalistic approach”. A predominant palette of blues and greens on coarse, loose materials provides an almost environmental feel, whilst elements of Eastern philosophy and martial arts are incorporated in order to create relaxed, ‘peaceful’ clothing. (Perfect for the current oversizing trend.)
Although this approach may be something of a new direction for the brand, their original (dare I say it) grunge orientated designs also make a welcome return for autumn/winter. Continuing with the naturalistic theme in a darker, edgier way, denim washes and monochrome colours are present in order to represent fog and dust.
Key patterns include tartan, stripes and checks – all of which will be familiar to regular customers – helping to deliver a selection of statement pieces that can be utilised to create a contrast to the inherent calm of the naturalistic side of the collection.
Finally, themes of note running throughout the AW12 line are knitted jumpers, patchwork construction, rough materials, graphic patterns and splashes of chlorophyll green. I’m excited to see which items will be hitting our stores from this cool Scandinavian brand, and even more excited to see more of that iconic skull in my wardrobe come October.
