Over recent seasons we’ve seen how certain ‘new’ popular footwear styles such as loafers, monk straps and brogues have become extremely prevalent within the industry. Their increasing relevance has even led to the silhouettes evolving, creating new adaptations such as the double monk strap, brogue boots and coloured suede loafers in order to satisfy the ever expanding needs of the modern fashionable male.
But where can the industry go from here? They seemed to have exhausted all the options for traditional footwear styles. The answer is a simple one: Hybrids. When we came across the Shanghai Fringed Leather and Linen Loafers from respected English footwear manufacturer Church’s, we were thrilled – as this particular loafer seems to elegantly combine many of these popular styles into one stunning piece of footwear.
This innovative item manages to merge 3 different silhouettes, whilst at the same time blending textures – combining dark brown leather with linen canvas panels – helping to give the shoe a smart yet somewhat relaxed aesthetic.
Initially resembling a classic monk strap, this loafer features a single buckled strap closure to one side. The style then switches effortlessly with the incorporation of classic brogue perforated detailing to the front, side and tongue. Finally, the inclusion of traditional tasseled detailing to the top of the shoe integrates the styling of a relaxed loafer seamlessly.
Each style manages to command attention individually, without over powering the other detailing; it is a triumph of a hybrid, and no less than we would expect from a brand as well respected as Church’s.
