“The Fashion is strong with this one”; Comme Des Garcons release a Star Wars capsule collection.
Star Wars is the latest collaborator to pair with an established fashion brand this year, giving us a nerd-chic, Yoda-covered, capsule collection for Comme Des Garcons.
The main quality of the collection is its unabashed love for the films and characters of the universe far far away. Yoda, who has been so egregiously misused in certain phone adverts, starts speaking his wisdom again; “Much to still learn you have.” Darth Vader also makes an appearance, and makes very clear the dangers of underestimating him: “You don’t know the power of the dark side!”
The collection intersects with several important trends, but does so in a way that maintains its ethos and avoids slavish dedication to outside influences. The button down shirts are in sync with the focus on prints but also make a nice alteration to the trend by introducing block patterning that only covers part of the shirt, and leaves other parts plain white for added contrast – much in the same way high street brands such as Topman have been promoting this year. However, monochrome dominates colouring completely, meaning there is less of the exhibitionism we have seen in some other movements this summer.
Star Wars is at the centre of nerddom, arguably more so than Lord of the Rings, and this loving recognition takes that affection to heart. It feels sentimental, which is fortunate, because this had the potential to be a heart breaking exploitation for Lucas fans. As it turns out, this is just the next step in the integration of pop culture into concept fashion.
