Dries Van Noten Holberg Cardigan in Black
Released as part of the highly regarded autumn/winter 2012 Campaign by Belgian designer Dries Van Noten, the Holberg cardigan is emblematic of the label’s cerebral approach to menswear. Not your average chunky knit or retro shawl collar, the Holberg is a modern adaptation of the traditional bomber-style jacket.
The cardigan features a soft polyester body, while the contrasting, tapered sleeves are crafted from 100% cotton. This use of thinner material may not be everyone’s idea of cosy, winter clobber, especially when considered with the cardigan’s short, slim fit. However, this is not, of course, an outerwear garment and it is these elements of fabric and cut that make it ideal for layering. In fact, it’s fitted shape works just as well under a Harrington jacket as it does beneath a parka or duffle coat.
Both the hard–wearing double zip closure and the ribbed collar, cuffs and hem further add to the unique varsity/bomber styling of the Holberg. This rather unusual and specific design in no way hinders its versatility but instead offers a different flavour to that which is normally situated squarely in the men’s knitwear section.
Why not sandwich between a light-coloured Oxford shirt and dark peacoat to add depth and tactility to a seasonal staple. Alternatively, let it leak into spring alongside jeans and a patterned t-shirt.
