With the party season on the horizon, formal wear – or at least smartening up a notch or two – is on every fashion conscious man’s mind. Whilst a quality suit can stretch even the most liberal budget, there are plenty of high street alternatives on hand. On the affordable end of the scale, H&M has contributed with a fantastic suit in a rich, dark blue, which manages to strike the perfect balance between formality and ease of wear.
While dark blue has stood alongside black as one of the ‘proper’ tuxedo colours for some time, it has enjoyed more exposure recently – most likely, in part, thanks to the stunning ensemble sported by Daniel Craig as James Bond in Skyfall. As a choice for a party suit, a midnight blue tux is an interesting option, as it provides an innate formality yet steers clear of the stuffy connotations some associate with plain black.
H&M’s take on this mini-trend is, strictly speaking, a two button suit but satin detailing on the collar and trousers evoke the styling of a classic tuxedo. The effect of this is to create a piece can be dressed up or down with equal success; one can wear it with a smart white shirt and bow tie to fully embrace the formal, or pair it with a statement shirt for a laid back, contemporary take on the suit.
The H&M suit in dark blue is a great example of how to dress for the party season without breaking the bank. Designed to embody the tuxedo yet also able to be worn as a standard suit, this is a great statement piece for those on a budget.
