Fashion Designer, Film Director or Author? You decide. Makin Jan Ma’s design process encompasses all three professions. The Central St Martin’s graduate designs for a fictional character; creating a script, biography and, of course, costumes for his protagonist. His muses have strong ideas and thoughts on his ideas of fashion, love and philosophy.
Guts Olo is the leading role in Makin Jan Ma’s Autumn/Winter 2012 collection (or latest film creation). He is quiet, kind and calm with a slim figure and innocent eyes. Working for his family business, he enjoys to doodle and hum songs in his spare time.
The costume designs for his rising star are an eclectic mix of fabrics, prints and styles – with the dominate print an array of grey clouds with vibrant, bold, yellow stripes. Oversized biker jackets and winter coats in heavy wools are draped over simple t-shirts and teamed with relaxed trousers. Guts Olo’s style is casual and relaxed, as though he has simply thrown the look together on his way out the door.
On 18th October 2010, Makin Jan Ma launched a concept store in East London, where on arrival every guest received a “creative seed”, with the promise of getting 15% off when returning with a fully grown plant. From the outside, the boutique appears similar to an abandoned building, complete with pieces of wood nailed to the door. However, the minimalist interior is sophisticated and modern – a world sharing his dreams, aspirations and creativity. The exclusive opening hours are from Thursday to Sunday 3pm to 8pm.
If you enjoy film and fashion then Makin Jan Ma’s is the designer for you. Get lost in his dreamlike, fun vision of life and explore his interpretation of fashion. Don’t worry; I’m sure he won’t be holding auditions on entry – unless you would like to star in his next film?
