Introduction
Due to the nature of our summer wardrobes and the fact that holiday season is upon us, more of our bodies are on show at this time of year. It’s fine during the winter when it’s only our hands and faces peaking out of our clothing, but during the summer unwanted body hair can become a more pressing concern.
Now I know what you’re thinking – body hair maintenance is a slightly strange choice of topic for an article, but lately I’ve realised that guys are much more switched on to body hair removal than your might initially think.
The main areas of concern for most guys tend to the back, chest and shoulders – and this is what most of the advice and product recommendations will be focused on in this article. However, there are obviously other areas of your body where these products can be *cough* used, but if you were hoping for a ‘man-scaping’ how to guide, you will have to look elsewhere (just be careful what you type into google).
Of course, as with any grooming practice, there are different extremes, you’ll get some guys who wouldn’t dream of anything other than ‘au naturel’, and others who’ll be perfectly au fait with whole body hair removal. Then there are the guys that would love to have some chest hair to even consider removing!
Me? I fall somewhere in the middle. It’s all about finding where you fit in that spectrum and getting the right products to do the job.
So Why Even Consider Hair Removal?
Well one of the most common reasons is that guys (or their partners) believe excess body hair to be unattractive – whether this is on the chest, back, shoulders, or anywhere else on the body. It’s obviously personal preference but as guys move towards a more groomed overall appearance, hair removal is becoming more and more popular.
Do you prefer a natural look? If so, do you still keep it trimmed?
In addition, it’s widely believed that a hairless physique shows off more muscle definition, so many guys are opting for a close chest shave and smooth abs to help show off their gym efforts. Ever noticed that Men’s Health cover models or swimwear models have no chest hair whatsoever? It’s no coincidence.
It is said that a shaved chest can improve muscular definition – but is it as manly?
Top Hair Removal Methods
If you’re hoping to keep a handle on your body hair, then there are four main methods (that don’t involve laser removal). They each have their pro’s and con’s, they each have their required pain thresholds, and they each have their unique results – but they’re all designed to leave you with a well groomed body.
1. Waxing
Think hair removal, and most people think of waxing. Think waxing, and most people envision pain. Now I’ve had my legs waxed (for charity I might add) and I can confirm that it isn’t pleasant, but it certainly isn’t unbearable – no pain, no gain and all that.
Widely regarded as one of the most effective methods because it removes hair from the root (hence the pain), waxing involves applying a strip and a sticky substance to the skin and removing swiftly – normally in the opposite direction of hair growth.
The results for waxing are pretty impressive, and the post-wax results will normally last longer than any other method. However, in terms of at home hair removal, it isn’t the most practical solution – particularly on your back – so you’ll either have to visit a salon or get some at home assistance. If you want to have a go from home, you (and your trusty assistant) can opt for one of the effective solutions below:

2. Shaving
Most guys shave regularly, or will have done so at some point in their lives, so shaving should be nothing new. In terms of body hair removal it’s probably the simplest method, and allows you to cover any area of your body in one go with just a razor and a shave product.
Arm yourself with a new razor (like those below), rinse regularly, shave in the direction of hair growth and you can’t really go wrong. I’d also advise using a shaving product with maximum glide and minimal foam. This will allow your razor to glide over the contours of your body, while giving you maximum visibility to reduce the chance of any unsightly cuts or nicks.
Before shaving any body hair it’s also important to shower with warm water (adding an exfoliating scrub like Anthony Logistics Sea Salt Body Scrub for maximum effect) so that you open pours and raise the hair follicles. If any of your body hair is particularly long, ensure you give the chosen area a quick trim with a pair of scissors or clippers first to prevent razor clogging.
The downsides? Well obviously shaving your chest with a blade poses nipple-slicing hazards, and your hair could grow back to be awkwardly spiky if you don’t keep the process up. But really, as long as you take care and follow the routine above, shaving will prove to be a cost effective and efficient method of body hair removal.

3. Hair Removal Cream
The less painful cousin of waxing, hair removal creams (or Depilatories) are a pain free way of removing excess body hair. They work by applying your chosen removal cream across the selected area, and then leaving for (normally) 5-10 mins while the products ‘dissolves’ the hair protein structure, before removing. Whether or not hair removal creams will work for you depends on your hair and skin type, along with the area of the body and the amount of hair you have.
If you can’t stand the thought of waxing, and shaving leaves you with cuts, nicks and razor burn, then hair removal creams are a great alternative. However, these kind of products can be a little harsh on sensitive skin, and probably won’t give the best results on thick, dark hair.
So, as a general rule of thumb, I’d avoid hair removal creams if you are prone to irritation or want to remove lots of thick hair. One word additional word of advice – be sure to follow the instructions and test any products on a small area of skin prior to application to avoid any bad reactions that could potentially occur.

4. Trimming/Electrical
Electrical trimmers are all about subtle maintenance and are perfect for hair removal beginners. Obviously it’s not going to give you a silky smooth finish, but it’s a great in-between option that allows to take baby steps and avoid a drastic transformation.
One of the best features of these kind of gadgets is that they allow you to control the length of your body hair, not simply going from ‘bear’ chest to ‘bare’ chest. This is also the best method if you’ve got sensitive skin, or don’t want to take a razor to any tricky areas. The nature of these electrical hair removers means that they’re much safer and pretty much eradicate the possibility of any skin irritation.
There are also some fantastic products on the market, like the Man Groomer Do It Yourself Electric Back Hair Shaver, that allow you to shave hard to reach areas yourself, meaning you won’t have to sheepishly ask somebody to help with your hair removal.

I Veet my c*ck and b*ll*cks on the reg and feel like a porn star! No girls wana see a George W Bush..
I wish less hair would grow on my chest and more on my face!
I wax, trim and shave regularly – chest, legs and bikini wax, arm hair trim and pits shave and a shave-and-trim down below. I’m actually considering laser on my chest because the in-growns are beginning to bother me. Why do I remove my body hair? Because I work hard at the gym (6 times a week) and it does show off my hard work. It’s also cleaner and more hygienic and discourages accumulation of sweat and grime during exercise. I’m Mediterranean, so I’m quite hairy AND the climate is a killer – so being hairless has other benefits aside from aesthetic ones. I don’t get odd and embarrassing sweat patches anymore and it’s great for sports, obviously.
Im the tattooed chest hair guy in one of your photos, au natural all the way! I just got lucky with my body hair pattern.
In the past I have allowed all parts of my body to be hairless for expermenting but found these days it’s just best to just trim the pubic section. But if! I had loads of hair on my chest or back, I would shave often to reduce or remove hair completely
I got hair on my back and also quite thick hair on my chest and arms. I did like 8 laser sessions (IPL) on my back. It is less and thinner now but it isn’t totally gone. I Veet my back en trim my chest. I don’t do anything with my armhair.
Every option in the article has a downside…
But still I manage to get laid so I’m not complaining…
That’s all well and good but my concern is mainly about arm/shoulder hair. So I’m all down for lower arm hair, it’s cool. However, when it doesn’t stop at the elbows and the thickness remains pretty much the same as it progresses onto my upper arms and shoulders, then I have a problem. (To understand the amount of arm hair density/thickness I’m talking about, Jake Gyllenhaall’s is probably the closest). So even If I go, say, wax my shoulder and back. How far down my shoulders/upper arm can I go. If I get rid of my whole upper arm hair, won’t that just look unnatural? Is there some way to get a “fade” effect? I have honestly been so troubled (and to be quite honest, rather self-conscious) about this dilemma. So, if you could help me, I would be ever so grateful.
Wow! this is the exact same problem i face. Too much hair above the elbows and waxing would make it too obvious and unnatural. i have resorted to bleaching my dark hair so it cant be seen from a distance but in clear light it still shows.
I find the best results are with an electric (beard)trimmer, I use it on my upper arms and it blends in nicely.
I had the same problem for many years and would get self conscious about having hair on my arms and a waxed back and shoulders. I decided one day while getting waxed to go for the full arm wax along with shoulders and back. I must say I was very happy with the result. Give it a go what’s the worst that could happen? Unfortunately hair grows back.
My issue is simply the fact that I have too much hair growth around my stomach, which irritates me a lot. I have started to trim the hairs off now, but now I wish that I never even shaved my stomach in the first place. Maybe my body would be a lot smoother. Obviously it is better to be natural, but excess body hair is just annoying.
I shave all my upper body each day ,trim my legs once a week,my wife shaves my d*ck for me, i think its much sexier to be smooth and as i work out whats the point in covering all the hard work with body hair.
I would describe myself as averagely hairy so have hair on my chest, legs, lower arms etc but I bought an IPL device for about 300 for my chest to reduce the amount of hair and it has worked quite well. I have tried others but my skin is too sensitive for both waxing and removal creams, shaving just annoyed me with the prickly and ingrowing hairs.
I think the results vary depend on skin and hair variances but for me I am pleased. I went to SK!N for IPL but at £100 a sesh and 10+ sessions required it wasn’t financially viable.
It’s worth a mention as an option these days I think as a perfectly viable alternative to the above methods. It isn’t a quick process mind, I have been using for about 9 months, once or twice a month and I would say I have seen a 50% reduction.
As written in the article its personal preference overall and on the field as such in my social group the lads with hairy chests do just as well with the girls as the ones who shave/wax/whatever.
I have shaved my torso every day since I was about 15. I have been a swimmer my whole life and during puberty I started shaving because no one else my age had any hair.
My upper chest is constantly covered in spots which I think are really ingrowing hairs. I was so fed up and with increasing amounts of scars from the spots I went for laser. I went for a full course, after each session my whole torso was covered in red blotches for about a week and now I am HAIRER THAN EVER, hair that was once blonde is now black. I believe this is a comment after affect. So I am a grand down, and worse off. Be weary of the hype!!
can anyone offer any help to my hair and resulting ingrowing hairs?
Frankly I’ve got hair all over – and you’ve pretty much summed it all up! You can only go three ways with hair removal and they’ve been mentioned here!
The thing is, you gotta pick the method of hair removal depending on what area you want to be hairless! Also on what you want that area to look like.
I take pride in my ability to grow a full defined beard and I have a chest full of hair which I will ALWAYS take to increase masculinity in which I will pick over muscularity any day! Gratefully however, I’ve got no hair on my back and cant imagine the thought of having any – I would wax that off faster than my partner could say “Sasquatch”! – and I wouldn’t shave it because I cant imagine how my back would look while the hair there grows back! I also pick to wax my toes over shaving the hair that grows there because it keeps it softer and cleaner-looking. You’ve got to put these things into account when deciding with hair removal!
just knob and sack completely smooth for me. the area above the knob i like to keep as a kind of designer stubble. i trim chest hairs and armpits to keep tidy, but would never go totally smooth. no woman has ever complained with a hairy but tidy chest. Shaving legs is also a no for me, leave that one to women!
I have shaved my body and pubes and find it grows back hairier every time and the growth rate and density of facial increases.
I have read on many sites about having no side effects of shaving pubic hair but from real experience i think that is not the case.
Does anyone else have a similar experience?
I’m 21 and I did the laser route. I just got sick of constantly having to trim and shave. I enjoy having the “model” image of a body. I have to say I am very happy with the results. It is a permanent procedure and it is very expensive. I did my full back, upper arms, shoulders, chest, groin, butt, and upper legs. It is quite painful, but worth it. I spent a lil over $25K. Most guys are just wanting to get their back done and that was only $5,000. I would only recomend you going to a place that ONLY specializes in laser hair removal. They are the only ones that can garentee permanent results.
I have used razors in the past for chest and for legs and I have tried creams with varying success. Creasm are my preffered option as the hair grows back finer. I have most recently tried a cream from SABI http://www.sabiuk.co.uk and it works very well. The reason I tried it was because of the natural based offering.
Am just 20.but am hairy as if am 40 especially on my legs.pls what do i do.
I’m 17 and have full beard (like 5 o’clock shadow amount) but really patchy chest and snail-trail hair.
I’m considering waxing upper body but if I do chest+stomach do I need to also do arms+underarms? Wouldn’t the contrast be too stark without?
What would be the best option for me if I want to have no facial hair ever again or at least not have to worry about it every two or three days like I do now? Cause I love the clean cut shave look but hate shaving and would love to never need to shave or anything again. I’d do the cream but I don’t think its meant for the face and laser treatment devices say from cheek bone down so what should I use?
A simple and helpful post indeed!
Most men know these methods but have no idea of the techniques and strategies. I personally balance between shaving and cream.
Thanks!
