Introduction

We apply products, creams, lotions and potions to our skin and hair everyday, but it’s not often we stop and think about the ingredients included within these products. It’s a little known fact that around 60% of the ingredients we apply are absorbed by our bodies, which is why natural and organic skincare has become one of the biggest players in hair and beauty – with men’s grooming hot on its heels.

In recent years we’ve really started to sit up and take notice of the food we’re putting in our mouths, and there’s widespread thought amongst industry experts that we should be paying just as much attention to the ingredients within our grooming products.

But its one thing agreeing with the principle, and another putting it into action. Sometimes it’s not that clear what ingredients are included in our products, and the line between what is ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ (and what’s not) is often blurred.

With this in mind, within this article I’m going to try and add some clarity to natural and organic grooming, giving you guys a clearer picture so you can make up your own minds about the products that you’re using on a daily basis.

What Do ‘Organic’ & ‘Natural’ Mean?

Before you start examining tubes and boxes, it’s important to know exactly what you’re looking for, and establish the difference between the terms natural and organic. By definition, ‘natural’ means anything that is grown well… naturally, or is basically not created by guys with lab coats.

For ingredients then to be considered ‘organic’, the product in question would have to be grown without the use of chemical nasties, pesticides or other potentially harmful formulations. So for example, tea tree (something that’s found in many grooming products) is a natural ingredient, but it may not necessarily have been produced organically.

The rules for labelling something as organic or natural aren’t that clear either. Something may be called ‘Organic Shampoo’ but not actually be certified organic. As a rule, for a product to be considered certified its ingredients need to be 95% organic or natural, and here in the UK the Cosmos Standard have a labelling system to help make these products easier to identify.

If your grooming products contain any of the logos below, then you can rest safe in the knowledge that your products are certified:

Why only 95% organic I hear you ask? While natural and organic ingredients are fantastic, in order for companies to give their products a shelf life, carefully selected preservatives are utilised in order to stop your products going off within days of opening them.

Why Should You Choose Organic & Natural Products?

As I mentioned in my intro, around 60% of the ingredients in our products are absorbed by the skin or scalp we apply them to. And while many man-man ingredients may be effective and have all the plumping, smoothing or soothing properties under the sun – they can have long term effects on the rejuvenating properties of our skin.

Over time, as our skin tries to cope with these foreign or unnatural ingredients, it can become weakened and as a result more susceptible to further damage. This damage makes us more exposed to pollutants, free radicals, dryness and sensitivities that impact ageing and overall skin health. Obviously natural – and more specifically, organic products – don’t have the same damaging effects.

Not only that, but product ingredients grown organically using sustainable farming methods, or those that have been ethically sourced, have much less of an impact on the environment.

So we’ve covered what it means for something to be natural, and why products with a high level of organic ingredients could be better for your skin. If you like the sound of going back to nature with your grooming routine, then you’ll need the very best products on the market.
