Kick-started back in the mid-90s, Shinsuke Takizawa has driven NEIGHBORHOOD to the forefront of Japan’s streetwear fixation. Involved in motorcycles and the surrounding culture, the brand was built with that cool aesthetic in mind and has successfully incorporated a military and a more outdoors theme to broaden the scope from which inspiration can be drawn. This limited-edition lighter is a perfect blend of those select few influences.
Clad in a dull military shade of olive, the fire-piece is a quality replica of the 1941 Zippo original. Precise colour-distressing has helped the product realise its fictitious age whilst also serving the pretence that it has been a well-used and most-useful piece of kit. The additional carved scratches to the sides are a scar-like reminder of the imaginary tours of duty it has survived through.
The remaining detail is both eye-catching yet subtle; a metal anchor with ‘NH’ lettering in muted gold adorns the front, whilst a small anchor motif engraving has been placed on the side. The final surprise lies on the back of the brass case, where ‘Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mistery, today is the golden age between’ has been stencilled in an amateur fashion. It should be noted that each lighter has been individually customised, so no two are completely alike.
If you’re going to smoke, you might as well do it in style. *cough*
