April is not a good time. Beginning with a day that involves universal pranking and widespread annoyance, its ending signals the arrival of the exam period and more widespread annoyance. Furthermore, the entire month is notorious for ‘showers’ at a time when summer is so close you begin to feel claustrophobic in a pair of trousers. Well, my first-class procrastination has lead me to Ralph Lauren and his recently released surf print polo.
Polo shirts are a staple for the gentleman’s summer wardrobe and, as the name suggests, the casual and sporty counterpart of the office garment. Sticking with the print fascination of late, this example features a repeating beach illustration atop an Air Force blue base. The beach-goers and surfers provide a hint of complementary colour and the use of shading gives them that quality appearance associated with Ralph Lauren. The white sail-boats, seagulls and clouds have then been used to lightly pad-out the design.
With these bold images it would be best to partner with plain and simple basics. A pair of chino shorts and navy boat shoes would round the look off well and give that unfussed, natural summer look. A word of caution; don’t buy too small. I know summer provides the opportunity to show off the autumn/winter gym hibernation but you don’t want the images stretched across your torso. Think like artwork gentleman; be the frame and float the canvas.
