Maybe it’s due to the looming Olympic Games, or maybe it can be attributed to the recent 90s revival – but either way, retro trainers are having a moment.
So what do you wear? New Balance, Onitsuka’s, Le Coq Sportif? All great brands. Although it seems like everyone is jumping on this trend, when I sport a sneaker, I like to approach it a little differently. This can be done through A) A little known 80s super cool running brand called ‘Saucony’ and B) A collaboration with an even lesser known New York footwear store, ‘Packer Shoes’ – a New Jersey based trainer shop which was established over 100 years ago.
Saucony has reworked its ‘grid 9000′ training shoe, bringing it back to life from the archive and giving it a contemporary update with the help of Packer Shoes, who have created some vivid and bright colour combinations and subtly integrated their logo onto the side tab. With a limited edition run of 350 per style worldwide, you will have to put your old running shoes on to stand a chance of getting your hands on a pair of these.
My choice is the orange and grey combination, which is perfect for adding that underlying 90s influence to any look without looking like an extra from ‘Clarrisa Explains it All’. Even though I shall be avoiding the Olympics at all costs, there is no harm in wiping the floor with the competition and going for gold with some sportswear inspired style.
The Saucony x Packer Shoes Grid 9000 trainers are priced at £95 and available from June 1st 2012.
