Charles Olive is a bow tie extraordinaire. Born into a family that boasts a long line of bow tie wearers, Charles Olive has taken the tradition a step further by establishing a print-led accessory label that focuses on – you’ve guessed it – bow ties. Tired of the traditional polka dot or stripe bow ties and the usual fabric haunts on the streets of London, Mr Olive found himself designing his own prints with little experience or know-how. Charles was fascinated with German-American textile artist and printmaker, Anni Albers’ work and wanted to replicate one of her prints. Utilising the spreadsheet program Excel (which most will recognise as a tool for numerical formulas) he was able to experiment with block colours within the limitations of a grid of cells:
Once using the program as a design tool, the Anni Albers replicas he initially wanted create instead became a point of inspiration. Now Charles Olive’s aim is to produce modern, exciting bow ties that are worn on a regular basis and have none of the ‘stuffy’ connotations that are commonly associated with them. The bow ties are produced in Britain, ensuring the craftsmanship of the product is to a high quality and standard.
