Jilted Royalty Summer 2013
As with any art form, fashion is inspired and created by experience – and so designers, like authors and musicians, must be completely true to themselves in order to convey their thoughts and ideas through clothes.
Such openness with one’s creative influence is a concept that designer and owner of Jilted Royalty, Jay Read, has not only grasped but exercised to his advantage. Born to a ‘broken home’, he followed a life of social decline that ended in heroin addiction and, finally, prison. Whilst most would have succumb to a life of crime, Jay founded his own label – enabling him to express his feelings and experiences through design.
Due to the designer’s background and inspiration, the summer collection (the label’s most comprehensive to date) sports a tough, masculine aesthetic. There are a blend of stylistic influences displayed, ranging from US Gangster movements to Punk and Gothic. The colour palette consists of mostly grey and black hues, which emphasises the ominous undertones of the range.
Whilst there is a continuous ‘dark’ feel to the JR summer collection, the designs themselves show great depth and diversity. Geometric, skull and logo prints are all applied to a plethora of silhouettes. The JR logo – which stands for both Jilted Royalty and designer Jay Read – is printed on various garments and provides an interesting twist to the current printed shorts trend, with the emblem dotted over sweat shorts rather than the standard chino style.
The stand out garment of the collection is the Our Time Varsity Jacket. Produced in a custom cotton and nylon weave, the jacket has a heavy, well-made feel. Moreover, additional features such as the front chest pocket and all-over logo print indicate the level of detail and thought that has been put into the design and production of the piece.
