Jilted Royalty Autumn 2013
Several months ago we featured the spring/summer collection by casual wear label Jilted Royalty. The release followed a dark and edgy theme, partly inspired by designer Jay Read’s troublesome life, as well as his own aesthetic preference.
This season Jilted’s owner/designer elaborates on this sombre tone, which is implied by the name of the lookbook, ‘A Cold World’. The collection utilises a dark colour palette throughout, offering the perfect blank canvas for the skull, gun and even Darth Vader designs – these Star Wars-inspired styles featuring the slogan ‘Start Wars’, along with a graphic of Darth Vader’s helmet complete with a face scarf, emulating a classic mob or riot look.
The collection is primarily comprised of sweatshirts, hoodies and t-shirts, all of which are worn in an oversized, relaxed fashion, thus creating a very masculine, no-nonsense aesthetic. This gritty approach is emphasised through the ominous quotes printed on the t-shirts; the gun print sports the phrase ‘Tools Of The Trade’, whilst the skull jack of spades card has ‘Life’s a Gamble’ applied to the intricate design.
However, amongst the many streetwear garments in the range are two new outerwear styles: the woollen varsity jacket and woven patch jacket. The first features the classic contrast sleeves of a varsity silhouette, although with unique, intricate details such as a colour transition between the sleeve and torso and brand embroidery on the wrists.
Meanwhile, the patch jacket utilises a classic field jacket silhouette, cutting the hem just below the waist. Yet, rather than using a material as dense as waxed cotton for construction, Jilted have opted for a lighter weave that’s ideal for the transitional months leading into winter.
