While many of you will now have your eyes firmly set on the spring/summer collections of 2013, it’s good to remember that we do in fact live in Great Britain and we have to contend with the British weather, regardless of season. The current Lily & Albert AW12 collection is ideal for this, providing classic and practical 100% recycled wool knitwear.
The brand’s inspiration came from watching fisherman’s wives on the Northern coast of Portugal knitting cardigans for their working husbands. Founder of Lily & Albert, Kathryn McCormick, studied this native art and has managed to successfully replicate the craft to produce unique and ethical knitwear.
Lily & Alberts’ autumn/winter menswear collection consists of a wide variety of cardigans and hoodies, as well as a classic crew neck jumper for good measure. All garments produced are truly timeless and feature the type of construction values that will see it last a lifetime.
My favourite pick of the current collection is the ‘Miller Shawl Neck Cardigan’. The shawl neck (or ‘coatigan’) silhouette is one that has steadily become a staple piece within menswear and can be easily styled with any basic t-shirt and jeans/chinos. The cable knit, wooden buttons and two pockets of this piece gives a simple style an interesting twist which only helps emphasise the hand knitted aesthetic.
We often hear about the sustainability of fashion and how we have compromised our standards for cheap, mass produced garments – Lily & Albert have managed to buck the trend by creating extremely hard wearing, high quality knitwear.
All of the knitwear of the collection is machine washable but you are advised to use a wool detergent and make sure you lie flat or hang when drying.
