Marwood London SS14
Taking a look around the modern office and bustling city streets, it would appear the tie is has had its day in the sartorial sun, with more and more gents opting for open-neck shirt and blazer combinations.
London accessories label Marwood attempts to redress the decline of this once masculine mainstay, with its range of impeccably crafted and visually appealing neck wear, pochettes and hosiery.
Established in 2010, the brand evolved from a blog dedicated to the art and heritage of gentleman’s neck tie design. A mere three years on, this sketchbook homage has succeeded in bringing modern appeal back to what are often perceived as stuffy, formalised accessories.
Next season’s SS14 collection, unveiled at the recent London Collections: MEN showcase, was inspired by the juxtaposition between intricate man made patterns and age-worn texture. The design team drew inspiration from the work of photographer Orri Jonsson, from which the collection’s sandy neutral tones and pastel colour palette emerged. The team were particularly captivated by Jonsson’s images of decayed Icelandic farmhouses, intrigued by the derelict beauty of what was once new, now altered by the passage of time.
Punchy geometric mosaic motifs, inspired by the tiled hallways of Edwardian England are central to the SS14 collection, alongside zigzag, micro-check and linear themes. Lace is also a novel feature; this traditionally delicate fabric is given an alternate character through the use of earthy tones and contrast silk linings. Finely woven wool and intricate silk-jacquard fabrics reassert the brand’s luxurious hand-crafted charm.
With such a fine selection of punchy prints on offer and the world gripped in Gatsby fever, there’s never been a better time to trade in that old chunky football manager’s tie for something a little more sophisticated.
