Miko Spinelli AW13
Throughout the current bomber jacket phenomenon there has been one name at the forefront of the movement: Miko Spinelli. The designer broke onto the fashion scene last year with a stunning collection of bombers that incorporated ornate all-over patterns and on trend contrasting colours – and for autumn/winter 2013, this approach has been developed further with the addition of new ethnic and animal-inspired prints.
Due to the immediate success of his debut collection, Spinelli has managed to secure both Selfridges and Luisa Via Roma as stockists. What sets aside this London-based designer from other outerwear artists is his completely unique take on staple jackets – a Spinelli garment is immediately identifiable due to its sports luxe silhouette, contrasting sleeves and/or outlandish all-over prints.
Many of the patterns that garnered such interest from the original collection have been carried over to the AW13 release, albeit with alterations to colour and shape. The snakeskin print is a stand out addition to the range, and sits alongside additional acid hues and leopard prints. The AW13 collection also sees the introduction of new silhouettes, with both denim and biker jackets making their way into the Spinelli arsenal.
A highlight of the collection is the leopard print denim varsity jacket. Whilst the silhouette is renowned for its simple aesthetic and versatility, in true Spinelli style the designer has developed his own individual take. By utilising eroded denim for the torso, with a raw edged border, Spinelli’s design has a rough and ready appeal, thereby turning a classic preppy staple into an edgy, rock ‘n’ roll piece.
Overall, the collection is the next step in the evolution of the Miko Spinelli brand. The designer’s maximalist approach continues to set his offering apart from the mass-produced, ‘safe’ nature of the fashion industry and has helped create a unique outwear label that looks likely to develop into a truly influential brand.
