Topman: The Next Big Thing Collection
Topman has released a new collection entitled ‘The Next Big Thing’. They have gathered their most promising buyers to tell us what trends are going to dominate over the coming months and put together a small collection showcasing pieces that should play a big role throughout AW13.
The primary recurring element is 1980s-inspired cut and sew sportswear. Joggers, sweatshirts and vests employ bold blocking (colour and fabric) techniques that capture the retro aesthetic. However, they are updated with a subdued, modern colour palette that lends the look a clean and sophisticated edge. These pieces are complemented by a minimalist take on the classic mac – a piece that is distinctly British yet rendered more versatile by the toned down aesthetic.
In contrast with this minimalist styling, another recurring trend is the use of checks and interesting fabrics to create heavily textured ensembles. A stand out piece comes in the form of a pair of flannel trousers with checked detailing, which offers a novel take on traditional smart-casual styles whilst retaining the blocking techniques utilised within the cut and sew sportswear.
In addition, beanies are tipped to be the big accessory trend for the coming season. Moving away from the oversized silhouette that is still undeniably popular, if a little divisive, the brand push towards a more fitted look and encourage you to embrace bold and bright colours.
Topman’s Next Big Thing collection shows off what we have to look forward to in coming seasons: retro sportswear and modern minimalism, along with an experimentation with pattern, textures and fabrics. These elements are brought together in a small collection that teases the kind of looks we may see dominating the high street in the very near future.
