Vivienne Westwood SS14 Review
Style is a matter of identity, it’s much more than one’s clothing. Many disapprove of bold fashion statements, but equal amounts appreciate the playfulness, the courage and the confidence that comes from acknowledging style strengths and weaknesses. Trends may come and go, but a unique personality has true staying power.
Never one to shy away from controversy, Vivienne Westwood is known for her quirky and rebellious attitude. For over forty years she has been provoking, entertaining and raising important questions – and the SS14 collection from VW herself is no exception.
This season, the designer has decided to put the focus on India, in all its diversity and its social castes. Always and relentlessly true to herself, Westwood doesn’t hesitate to speak up, display her beliefs or convey a political or environmental message. True to form, she does so with a great charm and an undeniable elegance.
Her bold creations on show at Milan Fashion Week seduce with colours – varying from warm and bright to muted and dusted – and hypnotise with sumptuous patterns, echoing the glory and pride of the ancient maharajas.
The silhouettes are soft and voluminous, slightly feminine even. Magnificent jewels, effortless silk scarves and dewy, golden skin complete the look. Sure, it would take a lot of guts to take this look from runway to real life. But we conclude, it’s a risk worth taking.
