Nike Air Yeezy II Red Octobers Shock Release
The final instalment of Kanye West’s designs under his old trainer deal took shoppers by surprise when they went on sale recently.
Nike unexpectedly released the Air Yeezy II Red Octobers, the last in a collaboration between the firm and West; who jumped ship to adidas late last year.
Following the rapper’s move to Nike’s rival, many fans believed they would never see the bold red style rolled out.
The release was not widely advertised or anticipated. However, that didn’t stop the $245 (£147) models selling out within ten minutes of the announcement being made online.
Many pairs of the now extremely exclusive trainers are currently being sold on eBay for upwards of £5,000 a pair. The highest price recorded so far stands at over £10m.
Along with West himself, Grammy Award-winner Macklemore and actor Kevin Hart have all been spotted wearing the trainers.
The original Air Yeezy sneakers were released in 2009, with the Air Yeezy II following in 2012.
Nike has since addressed the surprise release, stating:
“Nike was committed to releasing the Red colour way. And it was clear the consumer was asking for it. Nike communicated directly to nearly 2.6 million Twitter followers when we made it available for purchase… This is the final shoe in the Yeezy collection.”
West has kept uncharacteristically silent about the latest release, but made the following statement on the reasons behind his move to adidas:
“I looked at the adidas contract and I looked at the Nike contract and I looked at my daughter’s eyes and I made the decision I needed to be able to make to expand my ability to make product…I appreciate Nike for allowing me the opportunity to express myself.”
The inaugural collaboration between West and new partners adidas is expected to drop in September 2014.
