Bag Firm Debuts Men’s Collection

The Cambridge Satchel Company is venturing into new territory with a line designed specifically for men. The homegrown firm, which started in 2008 on a budget of £600, has added strong men’s footwear detailing, such as broguing and tassels, to its classic designs. FashionBeans spoke to founder Julie Deane, made famous in an ad by Google, about the range: “The Cambridge Satchel Classic Bag is for everyone, no question – man or woman, whatever age, only a sense of style is required,” said Deane. “But each season there is an opportunity to bring a special theme, an inspiration to a capsule collection,” she added. Design notes for the spring 2014 line have been pulled from travel, with nautical influences shining through. The colour palette is bold and includes chianti, a summer take on oxblood. Available styles include the Satchel With Suede, an updated version of the classic Cambridge Satchel. A soft suede pocket on the front is available in flat or fringe form, giving the bag added detail. The 14-inch design comes in three colour ways: brown with a blue flat pocket, navy with chianti fringe, and a two-tone brown-on-brown with fringe. Prices for the suede bags start at £155. Colourful versions come in the form of the Colour Block model, with two colour ways available. The style, which has been designed with the Italian coastal region of Cinque Terre in mind, is available as a standard 14-inch satchel for £155. In addition, a larger Batchel version – a satchel come briefcase hybrid with top handle – is being rolled out for £170. The line also sees the introduction of a new Portrait Backpack, an alternative orientation to the brand’s Batchel. The design features a top handle and adjustable straps. It is priced at £150 for the brown and black options, and £165 for the chianti. Six years after starting on Deane’s kitchen table, the company announced funding of $21m (£12.6m) from Index Ventures, backers of global brands and fashion retailers including ASOS, Moleskine, Net-a-Porter and Nasty Gal. Deane is hoping the partnership will drive the firm’s global presence, pushing into new markets including China, and more deeply into existing ones such as the US. The men’s bags are available now from The Cambridge Satchel Company stores and online at CambridgeSatchel.com.
