Todd Snyder Tokyo Store Opens
New York-based menswear designer Todd Snyder has opened his first store under a new retail deal in Asia. The three-story ‘Townhouse’ space in the Aoyama district of Tokyo is designed to mirror a tailor shop.
The ground floor of the flagship is home to a selection of the former Ralph Lauren head’s most sought-after items. Todd Snyder-exclusive pieces from Alden, Tricker’s, Superior Labor and Champion as well as Moscot, Leica and Aesop can all be found inside.
A traditional tailor shop is located on the top floor of the store, alongside a whiskey bar serving Stumptown coffee. Mimicking the designer’s New York boutique, ‘The City’, the basement has a vintage sportswear aesthetic.
The designer, who was Senior Vice President of men’s design at J.Crew before launching his namesake label in 2011, said: “This has been brewing for a while… Two years ago we did a pop-up store in Japan, and we’ve always had a huge following there. The Japanese have always embraced us — 50 percent of our business is over there. They love America and Americana.”
Snyder signed the retail licensing deal with Japanese wholesale company Anglobal Ltd with the intention of opening stores across the continent. Another three are expected to follow the Aoyama start-up in the coming years.
The deal, which covers the whole of Asia, has led to speculation of a potential venture in South Korea in the future.
According to the designer, Anglobal approached him because of his involvement in The Liquor Store in New York, J.Crew’s first menswear-specific store and a space immensely popular with the Japanese.
Todd Snyder’s Townhouse store is open now at 6-18-14 Jingumae Shibuya-ku, Tokyo. UK residents can continue to buy the designer’s latest range at the likes of MR PORTER.
