Get The Look: Jamie Dornan For Variety

If there is one man currently in the public eye that deserves the superstar accolade of ‘women want to be with and men want to be’, it has to be Jamie Dornan. Soon to be hitting our screens as the lead in the already infamous adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, Dornan has certainly been doing the rounds on the celebrity circuit recently. Always impeccably dressed, whether he’s gone for an off-duty ‘popping down the shops’ look, relaxed interview attire or full black tie, this is a man whose style is aspirational. While we could have gone for an outfit from his numerous event photo-ops, showcasing Jamie’s signature suited and booted look, it is his recent Variety magazine cover that caught our eye. Managing to combine tailoring, denim and jersey without in any way feeling dated, we break down the aesthetic and show you how to get it on a budget.

Grooming

This is key to Dornan’s cover look, as it shows both a relaxed attitude and an attention to detail. Go for a cut with a slightly longer, rough and ready top but use a light pomade or wax to give it a dull shine. A full beard isn’t necessary here; a day or so without shaving will give off the same sense of nonchalant cool. We Recommend: Mr Natty Pomade Wax, £16.50 at Niven & Joshua.

The Jacket

What gives Jamie’s outfit a relaxed, ‘not too over-styled’ feel is the washed out tones. The blazer is well-fitted and sharply tailored, but coming in a charcoal grey textured fabric, it’s less stuffy than a classic black or navy jacket. We Recommend: Slim Fit Blazer In Tweed, £75 at ASOS.

The Jeans

Faded black or dark grey jeans are what you should be looking for here – denim that has been aged slightly but without any rips or artificial distressing. They should be cut slim too, in order to keep in line with the silhouette of the blazer. We Recommend: Levi’s 511 Slim Line 8 Jeans, £65 at Levi’s.

The Sweatshirt

Dressed-down tailoring is a key trend for 2015, and Dornan’s grey marl sweatshirt offers the perfect balance between smart and casual. Opt for a similarly vintage style in lightweight loopback cotton. We Recommend: Long-Sleeved Sweatshirt in Marl Grey, £19.90 at Uniqlo.

The Details

The outfit really is very simple, but it’s the details that hold it all together. Things to note include: the lapel on the blazer (rounded and cut higher towards the neck) and triangle V-insert on the sweatshirt. These two seemingly minute details lift the entire ensemble, adding interest to a classic look that all men should have in their repertoire.
