Dressing For A Night Out

There’s no denying the whole ‘January blues’ thing is getting a little tiring, but finally, as we gear up for February – and pay day – our social calendar is set to pick up again. So, if you haven’t gone for an after work drink or on a night out for a while, now’s the time to invest in some new pieces to help you make an impact. This week we’ve turned to high street stalwart Topman for some tips on dressing for a good time. In store personal shopper Matthew Nugent has a few ideas on what we should be wearing after 6pm.

FashionBeans: What’s the best jacket to go for if you want to wear something that makes a statement? Matthew Nugent: A classic leather biker works as a great alternative to a blazer if you’re heading out. Keep the rest of your outfit minimal and clean for a less rock-inspired look. Try a white shirt underneath to really smarten things up. Recommended: Topman White Long Sleeve Shirt (£20) and Black Leather Biker Jacket (£175).

Many guys are still hooked on skinny jeans. What’s the best style of denim to branch out with? If you follow our shows at London Collections: Men, you’ll have noticed we’ve been showing a slightly wider trouser silhouette in recent seasons. Don’t panic though, we aren’t heading back to boot cuts just yet. For those of us who are willing to try an alternative but aren’t quite ready to give up on the beloved skinnies, I would suggest our Stretch Slim Jeans. They’ve got room in the thighs, so are more flattering to those of us with bulkier legs, plus they have a normal hem opening. Recommended: Topman Stretch Slim Jeans, from £30.

A lot of guys don’t want to wear anything that mimics professional wear. What else, other than a shirt, works on the top half? Understandably, a shirt can feel too formal and corporate for a night out. I often suggest to my clients that they try a simple piece of knitwear in a muted colour instead. Peter Werth is my go-to brand for knitwear. I would suggest a roll neck if you’re looking for a touch of old-school sophistication, or a crew neck with some subtle detailing for a more contemporary vibe. Recommended: Peter Werth Knitwear, from £34.

Trainers are still having a moment, but what’s a good alternative for those who like to dress smarter? Recently I have been favouring Chelsea boots and classically smart shoes for a night out. They are easy to dress up or down, extremely comfortable and always look sharp. My favourite pair are Topman’s own Hazard Boot. I also have my eyes on a pair of Hudson Black Tassel Loafers for when the weather gets a slightly warmer. Recommended: Topman Hazard Chelsea Boots (£45) and Hudson Black Tassel Loafers (£100).

Overall, what would be your fail-safe tips for getting ready? Clothes aside, always remember to enjoy the process of getting ready. Take your time, pamper yourself a little, put on your favourite album. It’s about doing what you need to do to make the process of getting dressed less of a task and more of a pleasure. Also, be house proud and remember attention to detail: make sure you shoes are polished, hair is looking sharp, and zips/buttons are all in full working order.
