Inspiration For Your Next Cut

David Beckham must be on holiday, because a raft of other male celebrities having been stealing the limelight recently when it comes to men’s hair trends. From bleaching in Paris to buzz cuts on chat shows, we run through some of the key talking points over the past few weeks.

Ryan Reynolds’ Buzz Cut

Mr Reynolds is a man we seriously envy: stellar career, hot movie star wife – and now a hair hero. The Canadian star stopped by The Tonight Show earlier this month to debut his aggressive new hairstyle, and it became an instant talking point on style blogs across the globe. In a dramatic move away from neat quiffs and side partings, his military-inspired buzz cut looks extremely contemporary and gives him an edge that was previously lacking.

This hairstyle is all about contrast – with the hair on top cut short and neat, you need to be confident enough to take the sides extremely tight, exposing some scalp. Ask your stylist to use a grade one clipper guard on the back and sides, keeping slightly more length through the top to create a similar disconnected feel. Facial hair is optional, although it certainly adds to the rugged, masculine aesthetic.

Jared Leto’s Bleached Blonde Turn

Causing quite a stir at Paris Fashion Week, this bold new hairdo is actually for Leto’s next role – he’s playing the Joker in the upcoming DC Comics flick Suicide Squad.

Although we weren’t sure at first, we’ve grown to like it. A man who has constantly pushed the boundaries when it comes to men’s hair colouring (his previous style incorporated a two-tone balayage effect), the platinum blonde colour is truly striking and could be something to consider for summer, especially if you’re looking to dramatically reinvent your look. If you want a similar effect, don’t try it at home. It’s important to book a consultation with an experienced colourist who will be able to tell you, first and foremost, whether bleaching is suitable (or even possible) for your hair type, while also clearly explaining the possible pitfalls of going all-white.

Calvin Harris’ Italian Touch

He used to be the nerdiest DJ going. Now, Calvin Harris is an international music superstar. He’s also the new face of Armani, and sent the gossip mags into a frenzy late last year after images of the Italian brand’s SS15 underwear campaign were leaked, featuring Harris topless and showing off his new athletic body. However, we are much more interested in his hairstyle: a classic side parting with short, natural sides and a slight shine through the top.

This cut suits men of all ages and style persuasions, and is really easy to achieve at home: simply apply a light putty, molding wax or soft pomade (anything that offers natural texture and a slight sheen) to towel dried hair and then blow-dry into place using a comb.

Lewis Hamilton’s Break-Up Pompadour

Who said a break-up has to wreak havoc on your appearance? Lewis Hamilton might not be dating Nicole Scherzinger anymore, but that doesn’t mean he’s wasting any time starting afresh. Earlier this month, the reigning Formula One World Champion attended Balmain’s AW15 showcase at Paris Fashion Week sporting a new look that included a glossy, heavily styled pompadour.

To pull off a similar look, you’re going to have to use straighteners (mini ghds are great for short to medium hair), unless you’re blessed with hair that’s naturally poker straight. You’re also going to need to apply a firm-hold styling product (a clay, gel or thick paste should do it) and finish with a strong hairspray to keep it all in place.
