Who: David Beckham
Where: JFK international Airport, NYC
Ex-football legend or shoe shiner? We’re just not sure. And that’s a good thing. Beckham’s masterclass in sprezzatura shows us that dishevelled shirts and baker boy hats are an unexpected power couple, when tied together with muted tones. Keep the change, Dave.
Who: Justin Timberlake
Where: Toronto Film Festival 2016
Who knew JT was such a matchmaker? On paper, 1960s florals and dark checks are by no means happy bedfellows. But the N*Sync alumnus charms them between the sheets with an impeccable fit and a dark tones-only dress code.
Who: Jon Hamm
Where: Tom Ford SS17 Show, New York Fashion Week
A Tom Ford front row is a pressure cooker. Not only are the paps in full force, but your look must be worthy of the man who reinvented tailoring as we know it. Unless you’re Jon Hamm. His plaid two-piece proves the benefits of a flawless fit, and he even navigates the battlefield with a smile on his face. You’d think it was easy.
Who: Justin Bieber
Where: Ibiza
Despite his busy schedule of spitting on fans and miming at V Festival, Justin Bieber shows that downtime can be stylish too. His camo tee toes the line between subtle and statement, while the fitted cargo pants ground the military flex without going full on SAS. Probably too late to say sorry, though.
Who: Cameron Dallas
Where: W Magazine x Hugo Boss Party, NYC
Internet sensation Cameron Dallas goes from #instabait to #instagreat. Dark purple tailoring is tough to wear, but the black shirt and lack of accessories lets the suit sing. Do it for the Vine.
Who: Kayne West
Where: NYC
While Kanye’s oversized head is oft-critiqued, you can’t deny his skill in oversized garms. The fit elongates the body (BFG Kanye is not) and billowy sleeves hit a happy note between wearability and street style bait. A monochrome palette grounds the look, if not his ego.
Who: Zayn Malik
Where: NYC
No, we’re not convinced the bad boy thing goes beyond the look. But Zayn does a good job of playing dress-up. The oversized leather jacket, while tricky to wear, is made palatable by the all-black staples around it. Not quite James Dean, but by no means 1D either.
Who: Patrick Dempsey
Where: Bridget Jones’s Baby Premiere, Paris
Bridget’s latest folly may be predictable, but co-star Patrick Dempsey deserves more than three stars. True, a suit-and-tie vibe is hardly groundbreaking, but he elevates the look with a contrast woollen blazer, paired with well-hemmed trousers. Beats a Christmas jumper.
