It’s fitting that a film about Vincent van Gogh should pick oil painting as its medium. Loving Vincent, which explores the artist’s life through his own correspondence, charts the tumultuous events that led up to Van Gogh’s suicide when he was aged just 37.
But it’s the production method itself that’s arguably most interesting; the film eschews modern animation techniques, documenting his life in oil painting instead – 56,000 works over the course of the entire film, or 12 every second, created by 100 artists who’d been trained to paint in the same style. It’s still in production, but from the trailer, it’s already shaping up to be a masterpiece.
