Umbro Wants To Make Wearing Football Kits Cool Again

Last seen on the Magaluf strip in 1996 (if you don’t count Jay in The Inbetweeners film), football kits have long been banished as tacky merchandise fodder suitable only on match day. Despite the likes of Henry Holland rolling out their own inspired tongue-in-cheek references to club strips, it would take a brave name to attempt to revive the look. And brave is just what Umbro, the Manchester-based brand that spearheaded football kit culture both on and off the field, is being. Ahead of a summer of sport, Umbro has launched its Pro-Training SS16 collection, which among drawstring waist shorts and side-zip joggers, features a range of football-inspired tops. Complete with the same recognisably silky feel as the originals, the tops take cues from teams across the world including Brazil, Netherlands, Monaco and, of course, England. The logo-led 1990s apparel range, which Umbro reintroduced in 2015, has already infiltrated top-tier fashion mags thanks to its streetwear vibe. But, as with the England team, we’ll watch on with bated breath to see if the brand’s latest effort lives up to the media hype. The Umbro Pro Training SS16 collection is available at Size? and other nationwide stockists now with the football shirts priced from £30.
