A key basic in any guys wardrobe is a polo, it’s a classic choice for an outfit when a t-shirt is simply too casual. Throughout the summer polos have been teamed with above the knee shorts, boat shoes and a pair of wayfarer sunglasses for the amazing French Riviera or Nautical looks that were so popular. Now we can continue that relaxed but refined style right through the winter with the long sleeve polo. With more and more designer’s releasing the long sleeve polo in their latest collections, it has never been more popular, or with so many styles available.
One way to go casual in a long sleeved polo is to simply rock it with a pair of chinos, a trilby hat, boat shoes or pumps and a mac. Whereas if you’re looking for something a bit more formal you could try skinny jeans, a pair of brogues, skinny tie and a cardigan. The different looks you can create with such a versatile item are endless and will make you stand out that little bit more than all the other guys in t-shirts and jeans.
The key to the long sleeve polo being so versatile – and this applies to basic polo shirts as well – is that it has formal styling with clean lines and a collar, but the material and fit are generally a lot more casual. The collar is especially key as it allows you to pair the polo with accessories such as fashion ties, skinny scarves and even a bow tie if you really want to go all out eccentric geek chic. In many circles, wearing a long sleeved polo with this kind of look is quickly becoming something of a statement, especially in indie fashion circles or those who have a more relaxed but forward attitude towards fashion.
The long sleeved polo (aka tennis shirts) have been seen frequently in designers autumn/winter collections catwalks and with major brands such as Fred Perry, Ralph Lauren and Nom De Guerre leading the way, you know you are in good company. The overall style of a polo doesn’t alternate much, but sticking with plain neutral colours for layering is key, and monochrome colour ways are also very good for pairing with formal items like skinny ties and bow ties. Do not be afraid to go with big bold colours or colour blocking if you want the item to be the focal point of your outfit or to make a statement – if you do this, just pair it with a more neutral piece of knitwear or statement jacket.
Simply put a long sleeved polo can mean the difference between a pulled together casual look and one that is just plain casual. Here are some examples we’ve found from the latest collections on the net to help you choose the right one for you…
All Saints
Love what All Saints have been doing with the polo shirt this season by adding length to the sleeves to either create long sleeved polos or even 3/4 length which just adds a twist on the existing polo shirt. Still right out in front on the high street in terms of innovation.

Nice article, the all saints ones are the way forward, they convey the edgy feel that most will be looking for. The Topman offerings are quite embarrassing in my eyes. Something I’d quite willingly buy my dad for xmas.
