Yes some of you might of baulked at that title and the fact that I am writing a fashion piece about men’s Burberry clothes. Over the past 5 (maybe 10?!) years Burberry has had a very poor rep in the men’s fashion world because of it’s association with football hooligan culture, who seemed to pick it up as the brand de jour whilst kitting themselves out and being idiots up and down the country. The Burberry hat and Stone Island jacket were very popular items which were instantly associated with chavs and so gave these actually great clothing brands very bad press through no fault of their own.
Neither wanted to be associated with such demographics, and it meant a slide and decline in sales and therefore dare I say quality as well. However under the new creative directorship of the wizard of modern fashion, Christopher Bailey (Menswear Designer of the Year 2007 and 2008), Burberry has been revitalised as one of the most sought after brands in the world. It is a very traditional British brand (like Paul Smith) and so produces quality essential British items including macs, parkas, wool coats and simple knitwear. Think “Modern Gentleman” and you will be close to what this new A/W 09 Burberry collection produces.
From what I have seen on the catwalks for Autumn/Winter 09 the mac is going to again be massive this year throughout the winter. Burberry has produced some amazing high quality designs which would look amazing over formal or relaxed formal wear. My favourites are the Navy, Stone and Black macs which just ooze class, but also have a fashion edge. A real quality investment at £250, which you could leave unbuttoned and just tied round the waist (check photo at top of article).
Burberry still have the traditional checked pattern throughout the lining of their clothes, as it is part of their heritage and history. However it is normally in the lining and not noticeable so you do not have to deal with the stigma from a fashion nobody accusing you of being a chav. This really is a high quality brand which is again reclaiming it’s place within the British fashion elite designers.
It may not be one for some of the younger “edgier” readers out there, as I would class these items within the young/middle age professionals market. But in terms of investment pieces and high quality garments, you can’t go wrong.
Burberry Clothing History
Founded in 1856 by a drapers apprentice, it has been transformed into a global enterprise that’s home to classic Brit heritage trademarks including the Burberry check and two Royal Warrants. Its mix of classic wardrobe essentials meets modern design detailing results in a collection that looks to narrow collared shirts, hooded macs, cotton blazers, wool coats and simple knits. Quintessentially English there’s an unmistakable air of effortlessness at play here – a brand for the everyman.

This comment is more of a request to Ben-article author. I love reading your daily blog, by far the best mens fashion blog on the internet. But i would come under the younger ”edgier” reader you mention in this article so obviously love the articles you do on All Saints etc. I was wondering if you would do an article on mens chunky cardigans in preparation for autumn as Im constantly seeing photos of people like russell brand and pete doherty wearing them. an example is this photo

Would massively appreciate it if you did
thanks xx
Hi Billy,
Thanks for reading.
Yes I can do requests for story ideas no problem. A lot of the new autumn/winter stuff will be launching around the end of the month (we have been told by our sources) so I will keep this in mind once I find some great picks for chunky knitwear from around the web!
It makes it much easier if you can see what I am talking about at the same time as me explaining it!
haha plz not!
more posts like this and less about trashy looks!
Well, I guess I have one foot in either camp…the edgy stuff is where my heart is, but am also mid-30s professional. I like the idea of being a bit of a chameleon – different looks from one day to the next – the only thing that would put me off is going out and passing 10 other people wearing exactly the same stuff.
I really like the macs in the article above (and who says you can’t wear them with all saints marine boo-its) – you’re spot on Ben though in that I associate the name Burberry with chavs and dribblers lol But then again, I can’t imagine a bezzler wearing a mac in the first place…
This is where the problem lies for me and what makes fashion so great. People have very different tastes and personalities so there is always going to be conflicting opinions.
I like to take bits that I like from any collection, whether it is my normal style or not. If I can think of an outfit I can rock it with, I’ll buy it.
I normally wouldn’t buy Burberry but this new collection and the Macs I really do LOVE. You could easily wear it with a suit, OR with skinny jeans and boots with a plain t-shirt. Items don’t have to be so black and white – sometimes when you mix styles the contrast just works.
Anyway I’ll continue to try and cater for everyone, so any requests you can contact us via the link at the very top of the site, or leave em in the comments. I’ll get round to them all at some point!
This collection is awesome, love to have them all.
