Editor Note: This article coincided beautifully with the featured one below it, as earlier this week Marcus Rise detailed a great new trend that literally TOOK OVER the catwalks in the Spring/Summer preview runs… relaxed tailoring. Quite obviously the blazer was a massive part of this upcoming trend and featured in every high end designer’s collection. So why not start planning your wardrobe early this year and taking a look below at some of the best spring blazers on the market at the moment. Cheers, Ben
Vote Blazer for Spring
In my opinion the Blazer is one of the most versatile pieces you could possibly hope to own. They work well as evening wear, great for day wear, great as outerwear, great for layering, great with a t-shirt, great with a scarf… you get the idea. Now, we have all heard of the blazer before and Im sure many of you out there have already experimented with them in the past? Being such a timeless piece there should be no excuse for a blazer not to appear in every mans wardrobe, even more so at the moment with some beautiful designs currently out there looking to lead your wardrobe into Spring.
Firstly, fit is everything. Buying a chest size too big will not make you look bigger or impress the sales girl, you will just look like your wearing your dads jacket so get the right size! Single breasted would definitely be a better choice as it gives you the option to wear it unbuttoned for a more casual look. The sleeves should finish anywhere in between your wrist bone and the thumb Metacarpophalangeal point… translation: the 2nd of the 3 joints on your thumb. I personally think the sleeve finishing on your wrist always tends to look better, especially if you are wearing a shirt or wrist watch (as Kanye has so kindly demonstrated above). If you don’t already own a blazer obviously it would be a better idea to purchase in black, navy, charcoal grey etc as they are timeless and will be more versatile with your current wardrobe. But, as I have already mentioned, there really are some interesting, unique blazers appearing online/in the shops and I think Pharrell (above) demonstrates how a colour we may not have even considered could really work. So if you already have the standard blue and blacks, and you are looking for something a little bit different, this might just be your season.
As well as the standard blazers we all know and love I am seeing a lot of knitted and Jersey blazers in the shops recently. Personally, I am not a fan. I don’t think they can give you quite the same silhouette your classic structured blazer can (which is what the blazer is all about) and basically… we’ve already got Cardigans to do their job! That being said though, I can understand if some men find them more comfortable or easier to roll the sleeves up for a more casual look, but I just don’t understand their purpose.
Modifications
With Jacob’s DIY article causing quite a stir at the moment, something I would strongly recommend, and something I do myself ALL the time is modify my blazer. When buying a key piece on the high street such as a blazer, one of the key give-aways that it is in fact ‘high-street’ is usually the buttons. They tend to be pretty plain and if Im honest, usually look somewhat cheap. As soon as I purchase anything with plain/cheap looking buttons i’ll visit the nearest habadashery and purchase a whole new set. I feel it just adds that little bit more character to the item and the chances of someone having those exact buttons on exactly that Blazer are very slim, therefore your item is completely unique. Also if you know of a good tailor you could maybe think about changing the lining to a different colour or pattern? Even adding a funky pocket scarf or a vintage brooch? They can all help add that little unique touch to the piece and will eliminate the embarrassment of standing next to the guy at the bar in EXACTLY the same Topman Blazer!

this article is great !!! i love this website, greatings from mexico city !!!
when i see a blazer… i think on Jude law <3
I think this article is great! I’ve bought 6 blazers recently, all of them for spring/summer! By choosing colours such as black and grey, there is little chance of getting it wrong! I also got a black velet one, but the velet is more subtle so it just makes it look more expensive! Some of the piping on the blazer designs is really really good and I completely agree with modifying the buttons – I’ve done this before and random people in the street have asked me where I’ve got my coat from! A great idea! I also agree that the flimsy style blazers have an element of “cheapness” about them – not price wise, because expensive doesn’t equal something that looks good always, but the lack of structure makes them look somewhat scruffy and therefore making it harder to match a t-shirt etc underneath it to take away the scruffy element, where with the standard blazers even if they are smart-casual etc they complement the outfit with the structure of them, making fashion mistakes much harder to make
@ashley very nice article , i think the most important issue for me with finding a blazer is the length of the sleeves but like you said you can always alter these to fit around the wrist. I prefer to the wrist to show shirt sleeves and your watch.
I was hoping for a wider selection though apart from topman, the junk de luxe is nice though. I do not have one of these in my wardrobe but it is a must have for me being 37. I want a charcoal one though but something that looks different to a suit jacket, maybe different colour color.
Ashley, I’m after a vintage brooch. It’ll probably get me beaten up where I live but at least I can poke them in the eye with the pin. Have you managed to lay your hands on any interesting pieces?
Hey, I’d quie like to try a look for a wedding so I wa thinking navy blazer, grey trousers as staples then handercheif watch, and probably a pale-r blue shirt, ut maybe this is too casual for a wedding. Any other suggestions (I don’t want to buy a suit as I’m young, I want an outfit with flair!) Thanks!
SM1; I’d have to say that for a wedding, you really should go with a suit. But wearing a suit doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to look good. Think of all the boxy ill fitted suits blokes wear to weddings with those god awful wide cut chunky loafers circa 1998… well, you really don’t have to look like that. A couple of years ago I went to my cousin’s wedding and whilst most of the men went in morning dress, I wore a grey tonic suit with a thin navy tie and managed to accidentily upstage the groom. Brilliant.
@SM1: A great look for spring/summer weddings is the short suit. I have a look book for this coming up on Monday so make sure you read up

I absolutely love blazers everything from Christian Dior to vintage £5, if the cut is nice and fits well then yeah. I got this custom made boating blazer in white with red vertical stripes, can’t wait to debut it, great article as always.
i love the article….what do you think the most basic colour for blazer?that would never go wrong
@Olly Yeah you could be right, I’d like to try a grey suit, but not sure where to get it, I quite like the Next Italia suits so I will have a look, I got a vintage brooch from Allsaints but it’s out of stock now so keep looking there.
@Luke Will check out that article, really enjoy your aricles they’re funny but good advice too.
Any chance of an article on sunglasses?
Excellent website Ben
Wonder if you could give me some quick tips, would be really appreciated as I am a fashion novice.
It’s my birthday on thursday and I am definitely getting a blazer, black or navy.
Could you complete the look for me? I want to wear a shirt underneath…would a checked shirt be any good? Or just plain? Any idea..
Also looking to wear dark denim jeans and possibly brown shoes..
Thank you
@SANTA: Great idea- I’ll get one totted up this week! Any other article requests? You sexy beaners you!
yea do sunglasse please !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not an idea for an article but what happened to look books?
Yes, Sunglasses
YES!!! Sunglasses would be AMAZING.. They are a must have. Looking forward to it.
Thanks so much for all your comments guys…..sorry its taken me so long to reply been a busy last few days!
@Kammy – it seems like you’ve pretty much put the look together yourself. You could pretty much get away with any shirt with that look but Id personally probably wear something quite plain. Maybe a classic oxford style shirt buttoned right up or with a neckerchief under the collar?!!?…..worth a thought
When it comes to wearing blazers in summer, I think the colors shall be selected wisely or it might look a bit odd. Like black color is the “trademark” of winter and it feels really hot in summers if black colored blazer/jacket is worn.
However, this site is just awesome. I’ve never seen such nice approach and importance given to men’s fashion.
Best Regards from Pakistan!
…ummm agree blazers are one of the first clothes we need to have in our wardrop.
i like it to wear over a very basic white or black tee, rather than a shirt. but the most sensitive point is, blazer should goes with our denim colour. as soon as you sort it out, it make your day good.
