Moss first began finding its feet as an alternative to bespoke tailoring, which was becoming too expensive during the early 1900s, and broke into the market after a few decades of establishing the business in the late 1800s, under its founder Moses Moss. When he died, his two sons took over the already burgeoning business and successfully won over new customers with their novel format of hand finished garments, made by skilled Saville Row tailors, that were ready to wear. At this time, all other ready to wear suits were machine made in factories, so the personal touch of hand finishing really stood Moss apart from other competitors offering tailored suiting in a lower price bracket.
With this, the now famous Moss Bros hire service was born. Then, during WWI, Moss extended their range to offer military clothing to soldiers, with great success. By 1942, King George was demanding that Moss kitted out parties in the House of Lords.
Since these early days, Moss has continued to grow, and is now the leading formal menswear specialist on the high street. Moss Bros today holds the license for some of the most fashion forward brands. Exclusive ranges are now developed by Moss Bros under the French Connection brand, as well as luxurious brands such as Calvin Klein, Ted Baker, Canali, Zegna. Cerruti remain Moss Bros best sellers online and in store. A women's department, specialising in bridal designs, evening gowns, gloves and hats has also been available since 1939.
