How much ankle is too much ankle

Last night I had a conversation with the missus about roll ups on trousers.

Recently started incorporating a turn up or roll up into looks having previously been against it, I think it really adds a lot to an outfit.

Question is, how much is too much, I think about 1.5-2" looks great (above ankle bone), where as my other half thinks anything over 1" takes things too far.

Obviously it depends on the outfit, I'm talking about skinny/slim trousers and smartish shoes (derbies, brogues etc) above though.

1". You want to show off the shoe and little bit of sock (or skin, if you swing with the no sock trend), not half your leg - which is what will happen when you sit down, if you roll up too far.

You can roll/turn up a bit more if you're wearing high boots.

Yeah, its interesting though because a lot of the lookbook photos have a lot more than 1" rolled up (check out the linen lookbooks on the front page today for instance).

I think 1" tends to subtly show the shoe/sock as you say and is definitely better for smarter looks, but rolling high can add a cool edge to a more casual look and becomes kind of a feature of the outfit. I might take some photos tonight and see what people think.

Anything over 1 inch is straying into dangerous territory. It's very fashion forward, and there is a small chance you'll be squirming at pictures of yourself in twenty years time. Then again, I'm sure we all will.

True, about the feature of the outfit. In the end, it's a matter of where you want to go, but frankly I think a lot of look books go too far with it. It might look cool in a set up picture, but out on the town, I don't know.

I have running shoes, no-show socks, skinny jeans and a good 4" turnup today. I think if you're going to go for it, just go all the way!

I would go for less though prob with a smarter look or with socks.
