    Raw jeans recommendation

So after 2 years of wear my Nudie Grim Tims are looking a bit tired out; they still work for casual outfits (with the aid of some patching), but I'm looking for another pair of raws for more smart-casual wear, where it's harder to get away with having holes in your crotch and knees. I want a similar fit, so current options are same again (either exactly the same or in selvage if I'm feeling flush), or APC Petit New Standards, although it seems like they're regarded as overpriced for what they are these days.

Any thoughts or suggestions for other options with a similar cut (slim with roomier thighs and a strong taper to a narrow leg opening)?

I have a pair of APC New Cures and Petit Standards. The latter are an awesome fit. Skinny without being skin tight or too hipster: a great slim cut.
I think, as you suggest, the Petit New Standards would be better as they are more roomy in the thighs. I'd be tempted to get a pair of those next just to complete the trilogy of slim-APC cuts.

I can't recommend the APC's enough. The denim quality is 10X better than the Nudie's I owned for a week, the cut is sublime and the detailing is nice and minimal. They fade really nicely too.

If you can pick up a new pair off eBay for 80 or less you will be laughing. Just don't get them too tight in the crotch or you will risk a blowout if you abuse them too much (unfortunately my New Cures are dangerously close after 7 months and one soak/wash).

So I searched on eBay and discovered a pair of beige Petit Standards ending tonight with 0 bids in my size for 24.99. Just had to buy them.

No closer to a new pair of raws though...

If you do want to stick with Nudies, I'd maybe give the selvedge Thin Finns a go. They fade very nicely.

One thing to remember as well BSB: APC's are generally vanity sized, so my current Petit Standards are a 27 waist, and I am a 30 waist usually. I downsized to account for the material stretching (they can stretch quite a lot after 3 weeks of wear), and also because - as mentioned - they are sized to appease the minds of diet-conscious women (the jeans are usually unisex).

I recon I could have got a 28 though, as after one week of wear they have not stretched as much as my New Cures. I am worried about my chances of fatherhood...

Definitely agree with the APC recommendation. I have had a pair for over 2yrs now and they look and feel fantastic and are wearing really well. You hear stories of crotch blow outs and so forth but I'm not seeing anything like this. Similar with the stretching. Sizing wise, I wear a 32 in Nudie Jeans and also a 32 in APC New Cure. In the Petit Standard I needed a 31. To begin with they were snug around the waist but after about 3 months they were a perfect fit. Hope that helps.

If you're looking for a similar cut to Grim Tim, but with more of a taper, I'd suggest either Hai Kai/Thin Finn, APC New Cures or a pair of Edwin ED80 (although I'm not sure if they're available in raw denim). APC Petite Standards have a much lower rise, which is why if you're looking for a similar cut but more of a taper, I wouldn't recommend them unless you try them on. New Cures have a regular rise with a slight taper. Hai Kai's are awesome, again, a very similar spec to Grim Tim with a really narrow leg opening.

I'm reasonably happy with the taper on the Grim Tims, could go a little slimmer. The APCs I was looking at were the Petit New Standards; somewhere between the NS and PS, similar leg opening to PS but roomier in the thigh and slightly higher rise. Will have a look at the Edwins too though, thanks.

Which brands and styles would you recommend for someone with bigger legs? I'm a cyclist so have massive calves and big quads so anything that fits somewhere between slim and regular is ideal for me. I currently have some Boss Oranges ones (36, 32 in regular fit but fit like slims), but they're a little tight on the crotch and suited more to spring and autumn. I want something heavier for the winter. Any ideas?

If you're looking for quality denim/well constructed at a very good price, look no further than Edwin's ED-55. They're a regular fit jean on the seat, and you can get ED-55's with a slight taper if you want a slightly slimmer silhouette. Nudie Slim Jim's are good, they're not too tight nor baggy. Diesel do a jean called the 'Larkee' which is their best selling jean. It's based around a classic 5 pocket with a nice straight leg cut. They also do a 'Larkee-T' which is the same cut but with a slightly tapered bottom.

My advice would be to go to a stockist and try a bunch on. Buying denims can be a nightmare, there are so many factors when choosing a pair of jeans, but once you get the right pair, they'll last you for years.
