    A suit for 40s

Clueless here - looking for basic advice - please be gentle!

I buy a suit about once every 10 years. It's time again!

    I am mid-40s now, tall and pot-bellied.

Where would I go high street or central London with a budget of 300 (I intend then to spend a little extra on getting it altered/fitted/tailored) and what should I be looking for?

(Or point me to a more suitable forum?!)

Welcome, if you are looking for something more on the trendy side:

Home | Suitsupply Online Store (stores in London). They do in store tailoring
Topman in Oxford circus has a decent range of both muted and trendy suits
Next do a good mid range

For something more subtle and classic, marks and spencer and Austin reed. If you walk along regent street / oxford street in London all of these are within 5 minutes if each other.

Get a single breasted navy or grey, possibly with a light glen plaid check if you want something trendy and current.

For RTW suits, Austin Reed or T.M.Lewin would be worth popping into. Both do suits in pretty traditional and more fashion forward cuts and both have pretty regular sales that make their suits excellent value.

If you have a branch of Slater's Menswear anywhere near you they are always worth checking out as they have a huge range of reduced price suits - often end of line but often have quality makes at really good prices.
