Other alternative is to wear a cardigan like it's a waistcoat. Do that quite a lot. Not as stiff or formal as a waistcoat, none of the insults of the snooker-variety (except maybe 'what a dork' styel comments - but from the kind of people who will be wearing a t-shirt with a hideous brand name written in big letters so you're safe)

I kind of like the idea of waistcoats, but every time someone walks into the pub wearing one, I'm reminded why it's a bad idea. Maybe it's just getting the occasion right? Brandon Flowers manages to make it work:

but then he's in a band.....

I think Ryan Gosling is actually wearing a waistcoat in one of those pictures.

    It's a cardigan under a leather jacket

    This x 1,000,000.

I don't think I've ever seen someone in a casual waistcoat that wouldn't look better with any conceivable alternative.

You don't need to be in a band to make that look work for you. Key points:

1: That is not a waistcoat from a smart suit - it's in a less formal fabric (tweed?) and has contrasting buttons and patch pockets, both of which make it a bit more casual.
2: The fit is excellent (slim without being so tight that it gapes around the buttons) - same as it is on the rest of the outfit too.

Here's another example of a real-life person (not a model) showing how it can be done:

(Admittedly he's in a band too, but Penguin Cafe aren't quite as famous as the Killers).

Both he and Brandon look pretty bad though imo

There is nothing I can think of that wouldn't look better

It's douchey / pretentious and lame at the same time

I just don't understand the appeal, but I suppose some people obviously do

Seriously they look more try hard than fashionable when worn casually.

I have a couple of wool waistcoats that I think work well for casual wear, in fact they were made for casual wear. They're more like sleeveless cardigans, really.

Mind you, because of the "stigma", I don't wear them very often, but I think it can work. I think the key here is don't wear a suit waistcoat casually, only with the full suit or at least together with the trousers and an odd jacket.

Have a couple of examples - and please, tell me the outfits suck if you think so, because I'm unsure myself.
