I don't think a white shirt need be boring necessarily. Just avoid a typical work shirt, and go for a heavier cloth. Also, if you're playing around with interesting accessories (e.g. The Santa boots and an obligatory pocket square, perhaps also in burgundy) then it pays to keep the rest simple. Some really good advice from Sam though. He's right that burnt orange and grey tweed works well. In fact it's pretty much the only time I will wear burnt orange. That said, you're also right that it wouldn't work with the burgundy shoes.
