The Correct Length Of (Casual) Blazers

I was just flicking through another style forum on which I saw a bunch of members lay into another rather viciously because his blazer was "ridiculously too short". The problem was, I didn't see anything wrong with it. This has worried me.

If I stick to the "traditional" rules of how long a blazer should be (gripping the end with your arms stretched down), then most blazers would be covering my whole ass. This seems rather too long for a casual blazer for me and in most high-street shops, the blazers are generally shorter anyway. I'm quite happy as long as a blazer covers about half my bottom.

Is the shorter blazer acceptable? Are these rules out of date? Or do they only apply to suits? Or AM I, more likely, just overthinking things?

I prefer shorter blazers myself. With ACNE producing ridiculously short jackets (which look amazing) I don't see any real issue so long as it fits well on you. If there's any sign the chest is tight it will look as though you've gone for a size too small.

traditional rules are perhaps more apt for suiting, the casual rules are a bit more relaxed but I would still say a blazer needs at least some length.

I don't like them too long either but then if I go short there's the issue of throwing a shirt on and finding it too long and if you do some half hearted tuck to get it out of the way then the shirt gets creased so if you decide to lose the blazer it looks a bit crap.

A blazer just arrived in the post today from ASOS. It's blue in an unstructured fit and I intend to wear it casually. Just wondered what you guys thought about the length? I don't consider it particularly short, although it doesn't fit the "traditional" rule of covering my whole bum (it covers about half).

Thanks Jay. Any other takers? Can I get away with this jacket?

Oh you can get away with it, certainly. Most people would never know. And it fits everywhere else nicely, which is more than can be said for most you see.

Thanks Jay, I'm planning on styling it with shorts this summer so maybe the shorter length would be preferable. And yes like you said, it's a miracle it fits everywhere else off the rack, so it would be a shame to send it back.
