Just above the knee sounds fine to me. I'm a skinny bugger and I wouldn't go any shorter personally.
I'm looking at getting some swim shorts to replace an old pair of random sports brands, and I figured it's worth getting some now because they're more abundant in the current season.
My main consideration is what length to go for? I see shorter lengths are quite popular at the moment, and they tend to be in single colours (which I figured are more suitable as I haven't been to a beach for ages, so they'll mostly see indoor pools), but should I be leaving them to guys with muscle and buying a pair that sit just above the knees instead?
Is there anything else I should consider? Most I've seen use man made materials (particularly polyester), though is that just because I'm looking at budget stores, or are they more practical than the likes of cotton?
Thanks for any input.

I prefer the shorter lengths, or ones that sit just above the knee with rolled (ironed) hems. If you get a pair with a good pattern, there's nothing to say they can't be worn as normal shorts if you were on holiday.
Reiss have some awesome pairs, but they're quite expensive. TK Maxx is your friend: I've got my last pairs from there.
I got a really nice pair in Primark for............................................... .................................... £2.50
They are genuinely nice too
Personally i prefer the slightly shorter ones, they look much neater.
i have a few pairs from asos:-

These ones are my personal favorites

Careful if you're going to France though. I got chucked out of a pool last summer because my shorts weren't short enough! I can only assume that the fashion offended them as they were proper lined swimming shorts.
Generally, I agree with ARES. That length looks good and can be kept on as general shorts.
