To Double-Denim Or Not To Double-Denim?

I only bought my first denim jacket this fall and I'm already getting comfortable with being fairly creative with it. I've even quite got into mixing it with more formal pieces, for example, with an oxford shirt, knitted tie, tweed trousers and pea coat when it was really cold the other day.

However, I've still got a real issue with double-denim, maybe because it's got such a stigma attached to it.

Then, on the GQ website, I saw this:



He looks great. This combination (a lighter jacket with darker jeans) was the look i was thinking of going for, with tan desert boots.

So, double denim: who does it? who doesn't? and why?

The guy in your OP does look very good. I personally prefer less uniformity in the wash but it works for him and his age to not go for the rock-feel of it.

The only top half denim I have at the moment is a shirt. I bought a jacket recently but they sent me the wrong colour one so I returned it.
Definitely on my christmas sales list to get a fresh one.

I double denim too.

Funny, I wore DD to work one casual Friday a few weeks back and some girl stopped me and said: 'You do realise you shouldn't wear double denim? ... But what you're wearing looks really good!"

I tend to stick to a really light denim jacket and darker denim jeans.

I wore mine with a khaki crew neck t-shirt and tan brogue boots.

Not usually a fan of the Canadian tuxedo but if the colours are in different shades, it can look really good. Like this for example

I'm another light-jacket-dark-jeaner, think it looks good. Works well simply with just a white tee or with lots of layers under/over the jacket like you mentioned in your smarter look.

Good to know I'm not the only one partial to using denim jackets as more than just outerwear. I'm working myself up to trying the blazer over the jacket look but I'm worried it could look a bit try hard/streetwear for my tastes.

I'm a big fan of the blazer over denim jacket look, but have been finding it hard to master in terms of fit.

My jacket is too rigid and my blazers too slim to really layer them that way, personally, but that's by the by.

Double denim is a great look with rigid rules. Wear a light jacket and dark jeans, beat up boots or brogues in a shade of brown/tan, a simple lower layer (tee, henley), and roll your shit up. By shit I mean sleeves, but I thought that sounded more authoritative.

Here is Ryan Gosling in Drive not really because he exemplifies any of these rules in particular but because he's Ryan Gosling so he makes me feel all confused anyway.

Yeah I double denim all the time, doing it today in fact




Wearing with some sand suede All Saints hiking boots and a stone henley.

I'm going to mix it up a bit though; usually I'm more a fan of light on the bottom half and dark on the top half - although I fucks with both. I also enjoy wearing in many combinations; with a chunky knit, a polo shirt under a denim shirt, a check shirt under a denim shirt, with tan brogues, with white plimsolls, with Air Maxes, with a flatcap, with a bright baseball cap, with a quilted jacket, with a tartan gilet and so on...

Not all together, obviously.
